With the apparent lack of QC in the 1st year models (Tundra, and probably Sequoia too?), there is not much reason to buy them.

GMC Yukon Denali AT4 is a better offering than Sequoia TRD Pro. Great that Sequoia has those fancy traction aids……but won’t do much good with the bad approach, breakover, and departure angles. The QC is apparently comparable sadly b/w the two. Heck, even the Expedition Timberland may be better too and that thing is a boat!

As for full-size truck, the gold standard in my book is the Ford F-150 Hybrid. 30 MPG. Towing close to 13k pounds…and getting better MPG than any truck while towing! ProPower generator that can power your whole house. Unless i am towing a house, F150 Hybrid is a much much better buyer than any diesel truck IMHO.

But yeah, Sequoia TRD Pro with those horrible angles, bad 3rd row/cargo, and no full-time/AWD is just a big disappointment from pretty much any angle.

It is almost as if Toyota just gave up in the middle of development of Tundra/Sequoia (due to COVID or competition just advancing too fast?) and instead of making a class-leader in those two categories (full size truck and SUV), they went and put out half-assed vehicles in hope of getting buyers to buy into the nameplate.

My prediction……Ford and Chevy will murder the two offerings from Toyota. Let’s all hope the mid-cycle refresh will be more competitive.

This sequoia is going to appeal to middle aged dads who want a truck but have to settle for a SUV for the family.

Denali is okay, but not particularly won over by GM beyond a diesel truck (even then, I have no use for one so it won't be a purchase anytime soon). Ford's EcoBoost problems and reliability make me hesitant to recommend them or want one, though the Bronco piqued my interest at first.

I don't know if the other brands will eat the Sequoia, but I don't think it was ever a big seller. It's main selling point is that it's a Tundra with rear seats and covered cargo, which is enough for most people. Personally I don't need a big SUV, I don't do real estate or brokering and it's just generally me for trips, so I'm clearly not it's target audience. I am curious to see how it fares, or if the XL version of the Highlander will cannibalize it.

Being the (barely) middle aged dad with 3 boys ages 7 and under, I am interested in seeing the pricing on this. I have an SR5 premium 4Runner coming in with a 3rd row in to port next week, running msrp $46.5k. I plan on getting new tires and wheels right away, and hopefully upgrade suspension in first 6 months. I don’t need a family hauler since my wife has a Chrysler van, but I do need to fit everyone in my vehicle once in a while.

It looks like there will be an off road package on the SR5 and Limited trims, and since I only plan on doing mild off roading/trails it may fit my needs. If it’s in the ballpark of pricing, it may be a conversation I’ll have with the wife. She already cringed when she asked about gas mileage on the 4Runner.

GM/GMC has come out with some nice looking stuff lately and you can get a diesel. I dont know what their resale value will be when its time to sell. They probably do not have the fanatical following the 4R does so maybe less. Also if you are buying one for your business (aka 179) you need to buy new so that part of the resale market is gone.

I would never buy a pickup again unless I needed to haul stuff around in the bed nearly every day and I dont anticipate that.

Not surprising, I figured the 4WD Capstone would be touching 80k.

Those prices are obnoxious. Not to mention the insane dealer markups that every dealer in the U.S. will be charging, especially for the TRD Pro's.

One month before the pandemic, I joked that the 4Runner I just got might be the last vehicle I ever buy. I was 34 at the time. I was and still am planning on keeping it for a very long time. If prices keep going bonkers like this, then my statement might become fact.

If $40,000 Corollas become a thing while wages remain stagnant, there's going to be lots of grand theft auto going on. Except it won't be shady looking guys breaking into your car. It'll be grandma carjacking you with her sword that's disguised as a cane.

I don’t understand the second and third row seats. In my mind, you’d get a sequoia size truck if you have at least 3 kids and want to also haul adults and/or luggage. However, you can’t put car seats in the third row (with the exception of maybe the middle seat), so you have to put them in the second row. But the second row has to tumble in order to reach the third row, where adults would be sitting if car seats are in the second row. But you can’t tumble with a car seat. Also, adults can’t fit in the third row. And there’s no storage space if the third row is up. I still like the sequoia, but how do you use it then?

Also, they seem to have included additional tech gizmos, like the car is now reading and predicting tire placement in the off-road mode. In this case, if you put some 40” tires on in order to get clearance for a hog like that, the system will either be useless (good outcome) or throw all kinds of codes and disable 4wd (bad outcome).

The complexity of dealing with a hybrid battery, which Toyota warrants for 180k miles, is also an interesting subject for a rig that’s potentially going off-road.

All in all, I appreciate the truck, but I wish Toyota did something like what Ram did with its Power Wagon and other lineup: have a nice plush IFS / IRS truck for the family (say, Limited/Capstone trim), and have a rugged truck with two solid axles for the off-road enthusiasts (say, TRD Pro).

2022 Sequoia ground clearance 10", 2023 - 9.1" TRD Pro, 8.6" in anything else.

2022 Sequoia Cargo room: 120 cubic feet, 2023 - 87 cubic feet a loss of almost 30% cargo room. .....LESS than a current 4-runner, and only slightly more than a Rav 4.

2023 TRD PRO turning radius also increased by almost 15%.

They might have put a solid axle in it, but in terms of off-road and interior usability that's the only thing that improved.

It is too big and heavy to be a decent off-roader anyway. I'm not sure (without reading reviews) how the solid axle affects the on-road ride but I'd never buy one to offroad. Either year will do just fine on forest roads and dirt roads though.

That was my thought exactly in the 2nd and third seat lay out, how am I getting anybody in the back row with 2 car seats in the middle? 3rd kid problems throws extra wrenches into many things.
