There are no overwhelming or prevalent problems never the less there are a few issues.
The front differential has been replaced on quiet a few.
Head unit turning on and off.
starting issues after water crossing due to starter.
Brake failure without any cause on a couple that was reported on this forum.
Takata air bag recall.
rear camera going out etc. Search the forum for more.
The point being, a well maintained 2006 with 200k could be just as reliable as a newer vehicle.

the only issue I had with my 17 is that I needed a full rotor and pad replacement with only 27k miles on the vehicle. probably b/c it's mostly driven in the mountains and it had 33s and a winch on it for those miles.

From shot gears, or the actuator going bad?

The front would make a grinding, groaning noise. It was the needle bearing in the front diff. It was so prevalent that toyota issued a tsb for replacement. I had mine replaced under warranty. Others have just put in an ecgs needle bearing and it's been good.

I'm not telling you what to do but what I want to do when I get back to America. I will be looking for a 10-12 SR5. I like the front and the manual 4 wheel drive. But I don't have the cash for a new one either so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I've got a 2022 SR5 Premium with XP Predator package and I love it! Very reliable and should last and last and last. I've heard that the new 2023 models may have a turbocharged 4 cylinder so the 2022 may be the last V6.

I’m in the same boat with debating keeping mine or selling and getting new. Has anyone had a lot of issues with aftermarket for 2021+ 4Runners? That could be a deal breaker for me

Hail @spartacus , for this is wisdom. Full disclosure: I'm of the age that I just smh at the thought of people paying $40K+ for a vehicle, new or not, much less what the sticker is on some of these things. But buying right now when the cost of everything is through the roof? No way. You can probably do what is suggested above for less than what a half-year's payments on a new 4R will cost you. I have 225K on my '07 Sport and my plan for disposing of it is someone buying it from my estate.

I'd want to get the last year of the current model, and I'd get it exactly how you want it.

I'd personally want a SR5 Premium or whatever package gets me a few options like power seats, softex, 3rd row, better stereo, and of course 4x4.

I don't care about automatic climate control, Kdss, Xreas, or a sunroof- more to go wrong. I'd hold out for the color I wanted too.

Heck maybe I'll go for it... A claimed insider on here says 2024.5 is when the next gen comes out? Crazy if true but can you blame Toyota, they're selling more 4runners every year and it's a 2010 design basically with some tweaks.

My 17 Pro has 50K on it and has been great. Just recently I hear my A/C- heater fan making a louder noise. Kind of like a clicking noise. Will get it addressed at my next service. I didn't want the extended warranty, but glad I did. Other then tire rotations and oil changes, it's been rock solid. Every now and then I get the stupid idea to sell it and get back into a Tacoma, but deep down I know I will regret it forever.

There's a lot to be said about a vehicle you already know is reliable and just adding miles to it. Especially if you don't like the way tech is going, you won't see that trend change.

I'm in full support for this portion of the comment lol -- this market is INSANE and makes all these vehicles not worth the prices slapped on them. I'd just be patient and see what unfolds through 2022
