Top recommended OBD code readers?

anyone have recommendations for code readers that are compatible with our toyotas? not just for CEL light, but helping diagnose other electrical/electronic issues.

I recently went through this. Bluedriver seems to be the best value, but I think there are better apps on your phone to use with it

Snap-On makes some good ones that will read even the manufacturers codes, but they are $$.

For the non-mechanic like me, the cheapest one that allows you to reset the check engine light.

I bought mine some years ago when my Subaru Outback’s dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree and disabled the cruise control. I still had 200 miles left before home over empty desert roads. I went into an auto parts store and bought mine, costing me about $45. My Subaru’s gas cap wasn’t tight enough. I tightened the cap, reset the check engine light, problem solved.

I’ve not used mine on my T4R yet.

The other day I was on a Toyota Aristo forum asking the same question, it was recommended to get the Elm 327
I haven’t purchased one yet because I’m still debating a $12 reader or $100 reader, if someone uses the Elm 327 maybe they have some input.
Also doing some research on readers a lot of them don’t work with an iPhone or pair well with iPhones, they appear to work well with androids though.

I've used the BAFX Products Wireless WiFi (OBDII) OBD2 Code Reader & Scan Tool coupled with the OBD Fusion app (and the $9.99 Toyota add-on they offer) since July 2018 with no issues. Here's a screenshot of how I have my app dashboard set up. It displays on my phone.

The dash setup can be tedious but it's a one-time thing and I suppose the flip side is that you have the control to make it whatever you want - number, type, and size of gauges, colors (text and green/yellow/red ranges on gauges), etc.

I really like how my Kenwood DMX with maestro reads codes and can reset them. Super easy and integrated right into the head unit.
