Tell me this isn’t excessive

Just got home from
The tire shop and noticed they put thirty one .25oz weights on my back wheels. That’s excessive right? 17x8.5 scs ray 10 wheels and 285/75/17 Yokohama geolander m/t tires Should I have them go back and redo them or go somewhere else?

31 on each rear wheel or total?
Either way doesn't sound right. Are they spaced out or grouped together or what?

Pics would help a lot

31 on one wheel grouped together. Similar on another and maybe 15-18 on each of the fronts.

I have twelve on one of my wheels and was surprised it took that many. 31 sounds like someone didn't know what they were doing...

How does it drive? You could call the shop tomorrow to let them know you dont think its balanced right and get on the schedule for a week from now. Give it a week, see if you have concerns about it. If it doesnt seem to wobble or vibrate, id probably let it be.

I was disappointed that when I had my new tires mounted, they used external wheel weights. But no issues with balance, so cant argue with results

Some brands and models of tires are harder to balance than others, and the wheel contributes too.

Sometimes a solution is to have them rotate the tire about 45 degrees on the rim and retry.

You can try to have them force match the tire and/or rotate it on the wheel to see if you can reduce the weight. I had to rotate one of my 35's on my wheel 180° and then another 15° or so when I swapped from balance beads to stick-on weights recently.

But we play this game with all kinds of aftermarket tire & wheel combinations. Chunky M/T tires and big aftermarket wheels tend to be the best combination for needing lots of weight. Sometimes you just get a tire that is a bit out of round or a wheel that isn't formed quite evenly. We've had to send tires and/or wheels back to the seller because they required pounds of weight after road forcing and force matching.

For reference, x31 .25oz weights is about 7.75oz or just under half a pound; which is a bit but not out of norm for big off-road tires in my experience. I keep bugging our manager to get some .5 and 1oz boxes for those things because it starts getting messy looking when you need to put down 4 or more oz in a spot.

Thank you for the thoughtful and detailed response. So I’m assuming it’s safe to just leave it as is?

Oh yeah, if it's not falling off, hitting the caliper, and the wheel is balanced when driving; I wouldn't be worried in terms of safety or anything. It's more a quality/aesthetic thing at that point, I don't know how tire shops charge in terms of weights (we do a flat weight fee baked into the balancing job); if they charge per oz, then maybe you may want to yell at them. lol
