Rear airbags with KDSS?

Been towing my new OGT Expedition 2.0 trailer lately and really came to realize I need to get the rear end lifted some. I've seen folks with rear airbags installed, but not any rigs that are KDSS enabled. Anyone know if this is possible?

If so, anyone know a place in the DFW area that can do this kind of work?

I have Air Lift 1000 bags with KDSS. No issues with install or while using. They are a game changer when towing and you can install them easily yourself.

This is the answer. I love mine. I go from nothing in my truck, to 500lbs of camping crap in the back frequently. Its nice to just deflate the airbags and have a nice soft ride again. If I had stiffer springs, it would be rough when I am just cruising without all my off-road and camping gear.

Did you require a lift to get your 4R off the ground high enough to install them?

Did you have to cut your spring bumpers?

Inquiring minds want to know!

I just used a floor jack and jack stands, so no. You definitely have to lift it up though. A lift would have been great. I did cut three rungs off the spring bumpers (all I was able to do without removing the coils) and used a hot knife to do so. I did two to start since there are a number of write ups with differing opinions due to different lift coils vs. stock coils (mine are still stock) and that was definitely not enough. I may do the 4th since the bumpers are still resting on the bags pretty good and I think it's riding a little stiffer than it should without weight in the back. It's giving me about .5" or so of lift because of it and it still rides just fine, so I haven't bothered. The bags can be folded up and slip between the coils with the help of some WD40, armor all, or soap and water. Then just air them up and they'll go right into place. I have the nipple down and haven't had any issues yet. I routed the air lines to the hitch plug bracket and just drilled a hole there for the schrader valve. I should also note, this is with the Air Lift #60809 bags which are technically for a 4th gen. I think Air Lift may have another set for the 5th gen too, so you can do your homework there..

With the Fox 2.0 shocks I have and even the air bags at minimum pressure it handles weight so much better. Filling up the trunk with mulch, salt, whatever is way more controlled. When I tow my trailers (no more than 2500lbs usually) I put them to 20-25lbs and it's night and day vs. stock. Honestly, that 20-25 may even be a little high. Ideal PSI for my applications is still a work in progress.

Also, don't think you need to go out and buy onboard air or anything either. I keep a mini bike pump in the car and it works just fine.

Airbags work great with KDSS. I run both the airlift 1,000 and the Firestone airbags with KDSS. (And GX460 air suspension in my KDSS 4Runner). My suggestion is to spend the extra $20 for the Firestone bags. The design of the bag is slightly narrower in diameter and has a lot less friction on the springs when it is unloaded. So I found the Firestone airbags to ride better unloaded than the air lift. Both work great for towing and hauling heavy stuff.

Thanks for the detailed response! I'm working with a shop who customizes vehicles like this to ensure the proper warranty and what not and even they were concerned with trimming the bumper springs.

There really isn't any other way, so they'll have to cut them. What warranty are they worried about? Air Ride or Toyota?

According to the product site, the warranty is better/longer with professional installation, however, my local customs shop is claiming these bags develop leaks quickly and become problematic. How long have you guys had yours and what sort of problems have you had? I'm starting to think the shop doesn't really want to work on something other than jeeps.

Mine were in for about 50k miles over 5ish years. No leaks. No problems. I'd expect at least 100k trouble free miles. Probably more.
