Low fuel level and acceleration hesitations?

i started a thread a while ago because, out of the blue, i started to experience weird drop outs while driving (steady or accelerating). i recently, for the first time in a long time (high gas prices!) topped up my tank. i have not experienced the issue since. now, its only been a few days, but wondering if driving the 4runner in 1/4 full to low light would have caused my issue?

in other vehicles, i could drive to nearly empty and have no such problem.

What Gen 4runner? Cleaning the maf, throttle body, iac could help. Also could be thefuel filter or the fuel pump if original or fuel tank might have some crud.

and another day of normal driving, and topped up tank. wondering were the fuel filter is located in the tank. thinking about my small gas power equipment, and how there is an intake filter attached to the fuel line. if the fuel is low and the filter exposed, it sputters.

Sounds like the pump is going bad, getting weaker. We can apply a little physics here 👽, in this case with your symptoms if they are accurate. With a full gas tank there is already higher liquid pressure at the pump making it easier for it to deliver the proper pressure to engine. As the fuel level decreases the pressure at the pump decreases as well making it work harder to achieve the proper pressure.. by the way after you did the throttle body/throttle body inputs service you need to do the reinitialization, a/f learn procedures. Anytime you unplug any of those sensors this applies.. good luck cheif ✌️👽

Sounds like your pump/sender unit is on its way out. I believe there is a sock/filter on the assembly in the tank. I have had similar issues with my 08 recently @ 209k.
It's hesitated & puked on me twice now. First was on an overpass incline with an almost empty tank (no light though). Second was a very minor incline leaving a parking lot with the gauge reading just below 1/4 tank..
For reference my trip gauge would read like 420mi with a full tank when I bought it. Now when I fill up it reads only like 360 which can't really be explained away by my driving habits alone.

looks like a straightforward replacement, but the tank has to be lowered.

It feels good as f_ck outside 🤠! I thought you were the one with the good news. I would just service that whole truck. I mean deeply. Everything from sensor cleaning to new bushings and everything else in between. You seem to have a wide variety of issues. It's hard to say exactly what the solution is to your issue because there could be so many culprits and it's intermittent. You should be out on the trail partner!

Fuel pumps create more heat as they age. Full tank of fuel can cool the pump. As fuel level decreases the older pump can occasionally hit the thermal shutdown. Sounds like your pump needs immediate replacement. Or borrow some walking shoes from friends that drive Fords.

Also recommend changing the fuel filter. Take a few minutes to inspect any fuel soft line if equipped for dry rot.

Man, what dealer is that? Cheapest I have found it is ~$630. Most other dealers list the cost at almost 1k..

McGeorge lists 2 fuel pumps one $610 and the other is $394, it all depends on the build date I think the engine, the strange thing is if you look at the "fitment" list it seem to list almost exactly the same years and both V8 and V6 that either pump will fit, so i'm not sure what the difference is between the two fuel pumps are.

Here's links to the list of the fuel system components for a 2007, when looking at the list the $600+ pump says it's for the V6, the $300+ pump says it's for the V8, but if you look at each pump separately and the fitment list, it contradicts that and show either will fit both engines, but that could be an error in the fitment list.

The only exception is for 2004 and 2005 models, all later years says either pump will fit either engine, also the 2003 seems to have a different pump as it's not listed for either of these pumps.
