What’s it worth

I’m looking online at a ‘94 4Runner SR5 4wd with under 130,000 miles on it. It appears to be EXTREMELY clean. Is it worth $19000? I know that I can’t go by book value and I already own an ‘01 and ‘05 4Runner. So I am versed in reliability and understand working on them. What should I be looking for as telltale signs of something being “not quite right”, I don’t take shortcuts so I find it harder to anticipate them. Thanks for any help.

It's worth whatever the owner gets for it, but I sure wouldn't pay that much for a vehicle that old; unless it was a rare collector's item I wanted really bad.

There is indeed something "not quite right." The price.

I suppose if it's been completely gone over, engine rebuild, fresh EVERYTHING, essentially it's a new car, maybe it's worth the price.

However: If I had 19k to spend I'd rather spend 10k on a truck and have 9k to add/modify it. Since you understand their reliability and working on them I'd also be more inclined to say that you'd be better off with something that costs less, even if that's at the trade-off that it's not as "perfect" as the example you're looking at for 19k.

Additionally you could find something cheaper in SoCal, fly out, drive back, and still save money but make memories.

Agree with this. I live in socal and have been looking around at 2nd gen prices in case I want to pick up a donor vehicle. I rarely see any above 10k let alone almost 20k. I think the most expensive one I've seen was for 13k, and it was 3.4 swapped and set up for rock crawling already.

Thanks group. You all make a ton of sense. Truth be told, I’m trying to help the wife of “my brother from another mother”. She bought his Japan built 2nd gen blue SR5 from him before they started dating. He had added every OEM option to it that was offered and he bought it brand new. So needless to say, it was special (especially to them). She ended up totaling it in an accident and has stopped feeling guilty in close to 20 years. We are also looking at a couple of early ‘90s Hilux Surf Diesels (a model that he loves). I just don’t want them to get screwed by the ghost of memories. So any and all genuine assistance is greatly appreciated.

Good God, no. Seller is probably just testing the waters to see if someone will bite. No chance he'll get that amount, especially not in SC.
