In need of a new vehicle - what would you do?

Lol, I'd probably nurse my 4th gen along since it's still running like a top...

Interestingly, came across one of these 3rd gens yesterday. Had never seen one before in the US.

It was in the parking lot of the Toyota dealership, undergoing what looked like some major motor repair. Located in central PA with Arkansas plates, if I remember correctly. Can't recall the mileage, think it was 210K or so?

I would have absolutely been inquiring further on this thing and if the owner of it would be interested in selling. That's insane. It's a beaut, that's for sure.

look for a 2019 4Runner, its the last of the non nanny models and before covid crazy. I wouldn't touch a 6th gen with a 10ft pole after hearing what happened to the Tundra.

What do you mean by "non nanny" models? Thanks.

All the automatic "safety" features.

(BSM) Blind Spot Monitor, Smart Stop, (PCS) Pre-Collision System, (DRCC) Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, (LDA) Lane Departure Alert. Even the smart key that they are no longer doing.

Just more junk that des not work as well as it should yet.

This was my thought process when I bought my 2019 new. I knew at the time 2020 would have TSS and didn't want it. Though I would like to have had the updated head unit with Apple Car Play and larger screen.

100%, I did the same (2019 4R). And my solution for car play/head unit:

Buy a beater for the new driver, new drivers are notoriously hard on vehicles. Plus, why saddle a new driver with a vehicle that gets such poor mileage? Get them a Honda Fit or similar.

100k on a 5th gen is damn near new, no reason to replace it any time in the next decade.

Also there are conversion threads if Entune version / big screen was a dealbreaker

I’m in a position right now where I want a new 4Runner, but don’t really need one right away. I have a 2006 Toyota Tundra SR5 Double Cab 4WD, that I bought brand new for myself. Currently at 187,XXX miles.

The Tundra is doing great, but I find myself with new truck fever. I have my heart set on a 4Runner as my next vehicle of choice. My needs have changed over the years and I am at the point where I could get along without another open bed pickup truck, and willing to transition in to a closed cabin SUV.

I’ve test driven a couple of 4Runners at the dealer, and also driven a friend’s Limited model. I do not require a Limited, and will end up with either the SR5, or possibly SR5 Premium.

I have two problems that are keeping me from taking the plunge right now.

1) I am finding that none of the three dealers I have visited are willing to deal on a new 4Runner. They are flagrantly / stubbornly staying at sticker price, and do not have a customer friendly attitude. As such, I do not feel compelled to buy.

All my life, I’ve been very satisfied with the deals that I’ve been able to negotiate for myself on new vehicles. For now, I’ve disciplined myself to dig my heels in as well, and have decided that I’m not going to pay sticker. I will wait those thieving bass-turds out, thanks to having a perfectly good set of wheels to drive in my current Tundra.

My wife drives a 2019 BMW that we bought brand new for her in 2019. We got a very satisfactory deal on her BMW back in 2019. The BMW dealer was very accommodating and a complete pleasure to deal with, unlike the snobby Toyota dealers I am currently encountering.

Incidentally, I am not expecting to trade my Tundra in at the dealer for a 4Runner. It will be a straight out purchase with no trade involved to complicate the figures. I have two potential private sale buyers for my Tundra whenever I decide to sell it. One of them is my brother, lol. Of course, that situation could always change over time, especially the longer I wait, but for now they both are bugging me wanting my Tundra. Lol.

My wife is suggesting that I just find myself a nice clean used 4Runner instead, but I have a bug when it comes to buying a vehicle that I MUST buy it brand new. I tend to hold on to my vehicles for a long time once I buy them, so I feel that I have to start out with a brand new one. But, that’s just me.

2) Now then, there is the thing about the next gen 4Runner. I am very curious about just what this thing is going to be like. Part of me thinks I should wait and see what the next gen looks like and drives like before I make such a major purchase decision. I have a bit of a fear of buying a current gen, and then having it immediately becoming old news in the shadow of the next gen.

On the other hand, what if the next gen turns out to be a turd?

And so here I set, in limbo right now- waiting for either something to happen which will cause the dealers to change their attitudes and start dealing again, or, waiting to see, touch and drive the next gen before making my final purchase decision. Perhaps once more is learned about the next gen, prices will start dropping on the current gen. Or not???? That theory may backfire on me if the next gen is a turd as I previously mentioned. What a dilemma.
It’s better to buy what you know, than to speculate on what you don’t.

I know our current 2014 SR5 has 320K basically trouble free miles and I want that reliability. Dealers have been told that the 6th would get some version (porbably detuned) of the 3.4L twin turbo in the Tundra. Do a Google search on the wastegate failure problems they are having with the turbos. The wastegate is an integral part pf
the turbo, so you have to replace the whole turbo when the wastegate fails. For that you might get 2+ mpg on the highway and it comes at the expense of engine reliability. No thanks. So we have a 2023 ORP on order and we’re keeping the 2014 SR5.

That's not true at all. BSM, DRCC, and LDA all work quite well and make road trips much more relaxed. I wish the 4Runner came with LCA because at that point all you'd need to do pay attention and the vehicle would drive itself damn near.

Having the preference of not purchasing those safety features is one thing. Alleging they're "nannies," whatever that means, and "junk that does not work as well as it should yet" simply isn't true. My guess is, if you're going to call safety tech nannies and have that much disdain for it, you've never really used them for any period of time outside maybe a test drive. Don't know it til you try it.

OP - Not sure what the mileage is on your 4th gen, but if you've maintained it just keep driving it until the wheels fall off. That should give the market plenty of time to correct itself. Also, hopefully by then the 6th gen will be out and you can spend plenty of time researching and checking them out to help make a decision about what you want to buy in the future.

That said, if you're simply bored with the 4th gen and want something new, but want to stay within the Toyota/Lexus family, go check out the GX460. Slightly more comfortable and family friendly 4Runner. If money isn't an issue, you could always check out a Sequoia (previous gen not current) or the LX570. Much bigger vehicles but very nice.

If you can downsize, just buy a Rav4. It's hard to find one but the new Rav4 Hybrid is awesome. If you want to downsize even more, go for a Camry Hybrid.

I've read all the "wait" comments and just say I totally agree with them. This recession and the inevitable decline in used car prices makes it prime for buyers to just sit back and watch it happen before you jump.

I would say if you must buy a car very soon, maybe just look around for some beater 4 cylinder that'll get you A to B. Could likely buy it w cash for a few grand, maybe do a couple preventive maintenance fixes and just tack on miles w that, then throw it back up for sale once you can get a better deal on something you want for the long haul.

I've got my 96 SR5 with close to 330k so now I'm looking at little 4 cylinder cars from the 90's lol....course this is my preference anyways, I'm hoping to find an 88-91 Honda CRX to be my daily driver since I had an 89 Si back in the day. Absolutely love the little car because mpg is like 40, parking is so easy and insurance/parts are crazy cheap =P course I'm also in my 30's and single, so only person to take care of is ME.

ANYWHO, try to hang tight til like the Summer or shop around online and just be patient. better deals are coming our way as buyers
