Depending on budget...i'd go for the ONLY step up that i would want...
LC200 baby...as my plan A
Tundra as my plan B...not the newest, the previous model Crew Cab.

They both might be a little costly, but you already KNOW they will last and last and last, and probably will do everything you want them to do, plus alot more

just my 2 cents...

Having the preference of not purchasing those safety features is one thing. Alleging they're "nannies," whatever that means, and "junk that does not work as well as it should yet" simply isn't true. My guess is, if you're going to call safety tech nannies and have that much disdain for it, you've never really used them for any period of time outside maybe a test drive. Don't know it til you try it.
No, its true.

Yes, they are good concepts but even on a Tesla they have some way to go. They simply are not there yet, but they can assist for the non/less proactive driver that wants to just get from point A to B.

BSM complaints/issues:
Dim visual indicators.
Switching off and on randomly.
Faulty sensors that wear out over time.
Annoying alerts.

DRCC can be aggressive and leave large gaps between cars when in stop/go traffic. LDA has been known to get obstructed by snow or dirt.

And your statement "I wish the 4Runner came with LCA because at that point all you'd need to do pay attention and the vehicle would drive itself damn near" is exactly why I do have some distain for these systems even though i agree they are an added perceived benefit for safety.
I love to drive, I enjoy the proactive nature needed to drive. I don't like someone else driving, let alone some automated system deciding things for me. These systems makes us become more dependent and disengaged and add little more than extra cost currently and some perceived safety.

I would not want them for around town and short trips but they could be handy on road trips. Probably not with the 4Runner - Toyota didn't even do a good job with its ABS.

The new and used market is still somewhat predatory. Increasing interest rates don’t help.

In the past, I’ve practiced buying left over stock from dealers after the new year vehicles have been on the lot a month or two. Dealers have been willing to deal to make room for the new vehicles. Especially profitable for me when the vehicle I’m buying is of a previous generation. To cut interest costs I’ve paid them off within a year.

Will that work today? I haven’t a clue. I’m not in the market currently. My T4R is an ‘18 and I have a ‘12 Subaru. I’m well into my senior years. I’m hoping that my timing will mean these are the last two vehicles I will ever need.

I'd say the Sequoia if you are pretty pavement-bound and gear-heavy. The 4R is just old and tired feeling. If you are off-roading, the the 4R is a decent option and can be modified to fit 33s. It is also smaller and much lighter (huge advantages) than the bigger Sequoia and LC, which are not great options for off-roading on our tighter trails in Colorado, for example. They are too heavy, too ponderous, and too wide. The 4R with a rear locker would be my choice of the three if off-roading. If not, the 4R is pretty meh to drive with its old motor and 5-speed trans.

The RAV4 is too small and I'd hate to be in a wreck with a large truck or SUV in that, so that would be out for me. The new Grand Highlander is a great bet for on-pavement duties. That was recently announced.

You're in the same boat I was a week ago.
My 2006 Range Rover is getting older and I know it's not going to last forever, so I started looking for a new(er) one.

I know you mentioned that there wasn't enough change in the 2023 to justify buying new, but I found that the used ones brought so much money (hold their value so well) that buying new seemed the only way to go... YMMV

Best of luck in your search. I hope you find what makes you happy.

In need of a new vehicle - what would you do? It's a question that many people face at some point in their lives. Whether it's due to an old car breaking down or just the desire for something newer and better, the decision to purchase a new vehicle can be daunting. There are several factors to consider when deciding whether or not to buy a new car.

Firstly, your budget is one of the most important things to consider. How much money do you have available for purchasing a new car? You should also think about your monthly payments, as well as any other expenses associated with owning a vehicle such as insurance, maintenance and fuel costs. Secondly, you'll want to decide on what kind of vehicle you need based on your lifestyle and driving habits. Do you need something that's fuel-efficient for long commutes?

if you like the ruggedness and potential in the 4Runner, i think that is your answer right there. a Rav 4 is a downsize, and a sequoia feels more suburban to me.

i'd stick with the 4R if it has made you happy.

lots of other questions though: do you camp? do you offroad? do you have a family and need a bigger car (e.g. maybe sequoia)?

Did anyone mention GX 460? It will be both feeling at home and also absolutely new car + at reasonable price. That's what I did. Recommend to do a test drive.

I would wait, but if not buy a used 2018 or something. I wouldn’t buy a rav 4 or sequoia unless you really like the sequoia.

Totally get where you're coming from! The LC200 and Tundra are beasts in durability. The LC200 is a solid plan A – it's a bit of an investment, but you're getting a tank that'll stand the test of time. Tundra, especially the previous Crew Cab model, is a robust plan B with a more budget-friendly twist.

You're spot on about longevity; these vehicles are built to endure. Sometimes spending a bit more upfront is a wise move for the long run. Plus, the Tundra Crew Cab has that classic, rugged charm.

Have you considered checking out options at Police Auctions USA for a potential sweet deal? Just a thought, you might stumble upon something that aligns with your preferences and budget.

Are you particularly fond of your 06? If you are, why not rebuild the motor/trans? If not, maybe a newer one? I have a 1998 SR5 2WD. I wish it was 4WD LOL! I have driven it 40k miles since I got it from my dad a year and a half ago. I really enjoy it, but if I had the chance to get a newer one, I would!
