Linkage Cable Replacement (CEL, TRAC-OFF Warnings)

I'd say over the past 6 months, I started to notice that occasionally, when putting my 2016 trail edition into gear, the shifting was getting sticky and there would be no gear indicator on the dash. When this happened, I'd put it back into park, then back into drive and all was well. About 3 weeks ago, I went to run errands and got about 1/4 mile down the road when the CEL, TRAC-OFF and flashing green 4R icon came on. I also received a "multi-terrain select not available" message on the dash. Throwing it back into park and drive again didn't correct the issue, so I took it back home to avoid any potential further damage.

Upon researching, it appeared to be everything from a bad gas cap to the neutral safety switch being fouled up, but the consensus on clearing the error was to disconnect the battery for 60 seconds which indeed cleared it for me.

Not wanting to break down on an upcoming trip, I took it in to get serviced and was told the linkage cable was rusted and would need to be replaced. Since Toyota replaced the cable, I've had no further warning lights.

I've read countless complaints about body rust with the 4R and I'm wondering if this is a symptom of a larger problem. Has anyone else experienced this sort of issue?

Nowhere did I read about linkage cable issues when doing my research, so I wanted to put this here for posterity for anyone else who might be experiencing similar problems.
