2025 4Runner News
Just saw this:
Next-Gen 2025 Toyota 4Runner Will Have Hybrid Powertrain
The link has more details but here is an excerpt:
We believe the 2025 4Runner will be powered by the 2.4-liter turbo-four that's currently in the Lexus NX 350, where it makes 275 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. A detuned version of the i-Force Max Twin Turbo V-6 Hybrid engine, found in the Tundra and Sequoia, could also make its way under the hood of the new 4Runner. Another option is the Hybrid Max powertrain, a 340-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder that powers the Toyota Crown. Recently, Toyota has pushed hybrids to a new level—like making the Sequoia and Sienna hybrid-only vehicles, so we expect the 4Runner to offer some sort of electrification. Besides getting better fuel efficiency, we expect the new 4Runner to have a new suspension setup to make its ride more settled. A new transmission will replace the aging five-speed automatic, and we should also see better off-road performance.
It could be very interesting if they also had a Rav4-like "Prime" and full EV option. I know hydrogen is being looked at now but these updates will be huge for a vehicle that hasn't really changed much in a decade or two.

Hydrogen- yeah, too early for most. Hybrid drivetrains are in a lot of vehicles now that are not full EV. RAM does not even make a regular Hemi now...they killed it for the electric-assisted hybrid Hemi. They are actually overdue. Tundra and Sequoia too, right? I would not buy a full gasser anymore unless I bought that Hemi Rubicon.

hydrogen? Good grief. Right now a lot of people have range anxiety with electric and there are tons more charging stations out there. I don't know of a single hydrogen station near me. There may be one but if someone has anxiety of electric range I can't imagine the anxiety the lack of hydrogen stations will cause.

My wife and I just got a Hybrid Highlander to replace her old, tired N/A Mini Cooper and all I can say is MY GOD I hope they put an adequately similar drivetrain in the 4Runner. Its no race car but it puts the 5th Gen to absolute shame. Maybe they're finally going to include a factory full-length roof rack also?!

The 4R is just way too old. They are absolutely going to update it. There is no way around that. We are putting solar panels because we get a crazy amount of sun all year. The neighborhood is going gangbusters on that. I told the wife the only gasser I'd get is that Hemi Rubicon. She shook her head which really meant- Do it!! That is mainly an off-roader and not a DD so for most of our driving, it will be the next EV. We will charge it solely off the solar, as do most here. Most have 8-12 panels. I'm curious to see what the new 4R look like, and how much torque it ends up having.

Glad I'm buying a 5th gen if that's the nonsense Toyota wants to pull.

As long as Toyota keeps making the 4Runner, I'll be happy.

Time will tell.

This 2016 TEP w/KDSS is a big step up from the 1986 Subaru GL wagon I used on the Outer Banks beaches for 14 years. That thing would go anywhere in the sand on 185/70-13 tires. Dual range 5 speed, factory skid plate, 3 position manually adjustable rear shocks and armored exhaust. All factory, including the white spoke wheels. The front sub frame finally rusted apart.
