TPMS for new wheels
i've done a little researching and my question is : what are you guys using for valve stems when you upgrade wheels? i've seen people say they use OEM replacements from t!re r@ck with short learning/calibration time and no problems. i am going with TRD pro gray rims with black lug nuts and saw a post saying that black rubber valve stems used on corolla's will work. your thoughts or experiences? i just want to buy once, if i buy the wrong ones and have to rebuy and remount that would be a bad thing.

if you want to save a few hundred bucks, you can bypass the tpms system, just check your pressure regularly when you do fill ups or general maintenance.

Won't the TPMS sensors fit the new wheels? If you can just transfer the sensors then there won't be any issue, but they will have to fit or it won't work.

Toyota uses Denso TPMS sensors, or at least they have in the past. Most shops don't have the software to be able to write Denso IDs back to the ECU and the dealerships charge a lot to do it. You would have to use the tire shop's sensors and let them write the new IDs into the ECU. Newer Toyotas might be able to do this procedure themselves.

My understanding is that the TPMS sensors are different depending on what year your 4Runner is. For my 2022 I went to autoparts.toyota.com to see which ones fit my machine, and then bought them from an on-line Toyota dealer with a good price.

Have you checked your owner's manual regarding how to get your 4Runner to recognize a new set of sensors? There is a procedure outlined in the manual, at least for my 2022 model, called "Registering" and "Initializing" a new set of sensors. I installed my sensors myself; I followed the procedures outlined in the owner's manual and they worked just fine.

Napa has replacement valve stems that will work with your OEM sensors. I installed a whole set on a GX470 with some aftermarket wheels a few months ago.

Something to consider when swapping wheels how old are your current sensors and how long are they expected to last.

In my case it was easy to switch the existing sensors over to the new rims, but tires are lasting longer than the existing sensor batteries so with 2 batteries down I'm looking at having the all tires unmounted to replace the full set of sensors. Kinda wishing that I had swapped them when I was putting on the new Tires/rims

well my plan is to get a set of MT baja boss's and some method 316 gunmetal to put on my MGM ORP which is on a train last report. so i won't mess with the factory rims/tires, keep for backup or sell???

Check with the shop where you bought your last set of tires. The shop I used (big name in this area) said if I had bought my tires from them they would install new sensors for free. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Cool, I swapped my old rims/tires to my 1st Gen Tacoma. and kept the Tacoma rims/tires for winter driving. I'll probably decide to sell off the old rims at some point since I doubt I'll have reason to go with the Tundra big brake swap on the little truck.

I recently replaced my 4 tires and used the best old tire for the spare No TPS needed). My 4Runner is a 2015 so the sensors were well at the end of life.

I went from 275 to 285. When the 275 were installed I did not have the sensors replaced since they were not that old at the time.

So now I have 4 new 285 tires on my 4Runner with new sensors and an almost new 275 for the spare without one.

I bought and installed them thru Americas Tire ( In So Cal, Discount tire in other places). They charged me about $30 for new sensors + programming each tire.

I thought that was reasonable.

We have sets of snow tires mounted on wheels for our cars. When swapping out for winter we just live with the TPMS warnings until the all-seasons go back on.

I lived for several decades keeping an eye on my tire pressures without this tech. It's nice but superfluous to my needs.

I agree. When I switched tires and rims, my sensors have never worked right. Went back twice and they said they are all "OK". Discount tire will check your pressures without you getting out of the car. I do that before any trip.
