Auto Lights

Just purchased a 40th Anniversary Edition and does it make sense that it doesn't have auto lights? We have a 2019 TRD Pro that has them. Why wouldnt't a 2023 have them?

I don't think the '23 ORP I just bought has them. I don't see a need for them if it doesn't. The same with auto climate control. I might use them if I had them, but I didn't care enough to bother to check before purchase.

I probably won't use the heated steering wheel. Well, if it gets down to 8*F again this year I might use it to take the chill off, but if it's 8 I'm already wearing gloves.

In 2016 they had the Trail and Trail Premium. Premium meant you got a few more features. Now it's the OR and ORP. Having bought a TEP and an ORP it never occurred to me that I was purchasing a luxury car.

This 2016 TEP w/KDSS is a big step up from the 1986 Subaru GL wagon I used on the Outer Banks beaches for 14 years. That thing would go anywhere in the sand on 185/70-13 tires. Dual range 5 speed, factory skid plate, 3 position manually adjustable rear shocks and armored exhaust. All factory, including the white spoke wheels. The front sub frame finally rusted apart.

If I am not mistaken and Toyota hasn't changed anything in the last few years, auto head lights are only on the Limited and the Pro.

That was actually one of the reasons we wanted our 2020 Pro if you can believe it as my wife kept driving around in our 2016 Trail without her headlights on.

Every vehicle we had since 2004 had auto headlights... except our 4Runner.

"as my wife kept driving around in our 2016 Trail without her headlights on."

Seriously? Has she had her eyes checked?

Clearly you haven't seen the amount of street lighting we have in a place like Phoenix. Every main road pretty much is 4 to 6 lanes wide with constant street lights in place.

Very different than the east coast (I'm from NY originally and lived for 4 years in southwest VA aslso). You see people driving with only their DRLs all the time at night here and not realizing it.

I also have a 40th and this reply is way late but I recently just purchased it (reverse imported it to Japan). To put it into perspective, I have other cars that all have auto headlights, which are now required for new cars in Japan, but seriously do not like it because I like to decide when they go on or off. Esp when driving on highways with intermittent tunnels or underpasses it goes on and off repeatedly which I really do not like. Hope you're still enjoying the 40th as much as I am!

True, the Auto Headlight are only on the TRD Pro and the Limited models. I purchased a new 2024 TRD Off Road Premium and no Auto Headlights, you would have thought it would be standard in the Premium Package. This option is standard on so many vehicles today that I find it a Toyota screw up on being customer friendly with their convivence options. It just when you are thinking about purchasing a new vehicle, that you give a lot of thought on options, make a list of what you want and be sure all features you want in a new vehicle are included on the vehicle you want.

Well it would say AUTO on the headlight switch if you had them. It also sounds like you don't have the Premium Option on your TRD PRO vehicle, but not sure of that.

As stupid as it is, one of the things we really loved about our 2020 TRD Pro versus our 2016 Trail was the "upgrade" to automatic headlights. It's mind boggling to me that Toyota has kept such a basic thing on only the two upper trim lines up to this point.

Our 2004 GM vehicles freaking had them...

Yup I think you're right about this. A bit ridiculous, but them marketing folks always looking for ways to increase revenue.

Bing an old guy and retired I haven't done too much night driving in my new 2024 TRD Off Road in the last 6 months. Now that daylight savings time is about to go into affect I guess I will have to look for the HL switch and see how it works.
