All these new Toyota's have same powertrain ?

I noticed that the Tacoma, Lexus RX & TX, Highlander, and now the new 4Runner will all have the same 2.4L Turbo powertrain and 8 speed auto transmission.
The new 4R will look just like the Tacoma inside besides having a enclosed SUV body. Ugly huge 14" TV set in middle of dash, I guess this is what people want now.
Guess I'll hang onto my outdated 2024 fifth gen 4R for awhile.

Toyota can't please everyone.

I made the choice to go with a new 2024 TRD Off Road just because of the past history of the vehicle. I personally don't think that the Gen 5 models will lose any value over its past history, the Gen 5 will always be a sot after vehicle. I feel the new Gen 6 TRD models will be pushing the $60,000 price range and could be higher, depending on dealer allotment and vehicle demand. Having one power train between models makes sense, if it proves to be a good one, problems with it could be big trouble for Toyota.

I too am glad I bought mine when I did!!
I think the turbocharged 4 banger is going to fall flat on its face in the towing aspect.
Also the 4.0 L 6cyl is 339 lbs heavier than the 4 cylinder so the 4x4 portion is going to suffer too.

I'm also relieved that I purchased mine at that time! The additional weight of the 4.0L 6-cylinder engine might have an adverse effect on the 4x4 performance, and my worries are that the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine might have trouble hauling.

It seems like the trend is moving towards uniformity across models with that powertrain and tech, but there's definitely something special about sticking with a proven, classic design like the 2024 fifth-gen 4Runner. Sometimes, the "outdated" option is just more appealing.

The "outdated" is being foisted upon us by those selling the "updated".

Never ever buy the 1st updated latest and greatest.
4 banger turbo been there done that. Don't see it being different ICE advancements included & Auto.
Depends how Toyota mixes and matches power curve to gear ratios. I'll wait for year after review.

Now that Toyota and Lexus are both using this 2.4 Turbo in many of their vehicles, I'm now questing myself on what Lexus my wife will upgrade to. Her 2021 RX 350 is a 3.5 V6, this vehicle now has the 2.4 Turbo in its newer models. At 79 I was thinking these might be our last two vehicles to buy as we only drive around 6,000 per year for each vehicle. This was my thought on purchasing a new 2024 4 Runner, both vehicles V6's standard gas engines. I do feel the Turbos will cost more in the long run to service, as Turbos require more service and any work needed to the engine will cost more because of its design. Really, it's not the money thing that bothers me, it's just that I like the old V6's and their longevity that they have had. I've owned many Hondas in the past and I see for 2025 their V6's 3.5 are still in many of their vehicles and no Turbo power as of yet.

My plan is in a year to 18 months, after seeing if the LC250 goes through the normal growing pains of a 1st run vehicle, recalls, upgrades, ect...

Plan A is to go drive one, see if i like the 4cyl hyb and if the LC nameplate is being honored...if so, that will be my next-vehicle upgrade.

however

Plan B is if i do not like it, if there are problems, if something out there makes me stay away...then ill go find myself a TRD Pro (2020-2024 model yrs), nicely maintained, and ill expect at least another 10-12 yrs of ownership.

Owning my 2014 T4R is the first vehicle i've owned where i have considered simply buying another one and owning it even more.

Funny thing happened yesterday, my son and his family are at Mt. Rushmore on vacation, they rented a 4 Runner to get around while there. He sent me a text and asking if 4 Runners had a 4-cylinder engines as an option, as his rental has very little power, he should be able to open the hood and look at the engine I would think. I do not know the elevation of Mt. Rushmore, so maybe that could cause some power loss and to make things worse, he owns a FJ Cruiser, would you think he would know.

Despite both being 2.4T’s, I read that parts commonality was somewhere around half between the truck/longitudinal 2.4 and car/transverse 2.4. (What that truly means I don’t know, nor can I tell ya what difference the hybrid option both has makes)

I remember years back hearing about how the “holy grail” was a world car that could be developed once and sold everywhere with minimal localization, makes sense we’d see some convergence in powertrains too as time goes on.

Maybe he found the elusive 2010 4-cylinder 4Runner on Turo!

I feel the 2.4 Turbo will work out in the long run as most of Toyota's engines do, be it either through updates, or re-design of the product. I fee over the years many of us purchased certain models just because of the power train and it's reputation for reliability in that particular model. I feel Toyota by putting the same power trains in all these vehicles, including Lexus, why would I pay more for a different body style and getting the same power train that 6 or 7 other vehicles have. It's going to be interesting to see how the new 4-Runner and Land Cruiser do against each other in sales. I would think that sales between the two vehicles will not be much more than what the previous 4-Runner have been. The Land Cruiser and the Lexus models with the 2.4 engine should have been manufactured with 3.5 Turbo V6 with 450-500 HP, now we have a vehicle that will be desired by many and will pay the price.

I helped talk my wife into keeping her 2002 Tacoma Pre-Runner with 3.4 V6. Retired life is easy sometimes.
