The Car Care Nut and Turbos

Once again "the car care nut" on YouTube is talking about Turbos in Toyota's and Lexus. You might find this interesting when thinking about a new 2.4 Turbo in your new Toyota or Lexus, or maybe any Turbo vehicle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gn5hrhTEERQ&t=15s

Thanks for the tips! There's a lot of modern turbo engines with over 100k miles. "Free" horsepower/torque comes with responsibility. I drive a Mazda with a 2.5 turbo. Change full synthetic oil every 5,000 mi., keep my foot out of it until temp gauge goes up, let it idle for 30 seconds before shutting it off. Learned those habits way back in the day with a trouble free Buick Regal 3.8 turbo.

That's stuff that anyone who's owned an '86-87 Toyota with the turbo 4 cyl 22R-TE would know. Or should have, many drove their trucks hard because of the extra HP, but trashed out the TC by not letting it cool down before shutting off the engine

Quite a few F150 twin-turbo engines have gone well over 200k miles; I know of one with the 2.7 Ecoboost that is approaching 500k miles.

Every diesel truck built in the last 25 years has a turbocharger. And some of those are also in the vicinity of 500k miles with no turbo problems. Treat them right and a turbo is an asset, not a problem.

My buddy has a 2015 Ford F-150 with the 3.5 V6 Turbo and he just paid around $800 to have his spark plugs replaced, main expense was paying to remove all the turbo stuff to get the plugs installed. Turbos will just cost more in the long run when it comes to repairs, just more moving parts to go wrong.

Total BS. He really got ripped off by whoever did that for him! The ONLY things that need removed before accessing the spark plugs and coils is the engine cover and a foam insulating cover. The turbos are down at the side of the engine and there is NOTHING turbo-related in the way of the spark plugs.

Here is a video...in the first two minutes you can see all that needs to be done to get to the spark plugs:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaYZ...annel=2CarPros

I changed all my plugs myself a few months ago. Six spark plugs @ $18 (that's the price from the local Ford dealer so you can get them a lot cheaper from some place like Rockauto), so that's $108. Took me about an hour for the whole job...and I'm old and slow. Someone more skilled could change all the plugs in 15 minutes or so.

I have an '07 Volvo with a 2.5 L turbo 5 cylinder. 233k miles and counting, not one turbo issue.

Only special maintenance I did was full synthetic oil, which I would do in any vehicle that I owned. Was never too picky about letting it run for 30 seconds before shutting it off, during normal driving I'm not being hard on the turbo.

Like the new 2.4, this Volvo motor is tuned for low end torque. It has a great driving character, I really enjoy it. It's not fast per se, but it's like a little diesel, it'll chug up pretty steep grades without needing to downshift from 5th gear.

Personally, I think the new 2.4 turbo is going to be a great drivetrain for the 4Runner.
