Been away for a while this is what's been keeping me busy

hey everyone,

With the way gas prices are going I decided that I needed to buy myself a reliable great gas daily commuter but one that would be fun. Having been around them my whole life I naturally decided to go with a motorcycle. I did some research on what would be a good choice. I ended up purchasing a 1981 yamaha xs650 with 12k miles for $1K and has been giving me 50+mpg!!! I love this bike it's in near mint condition and has proven to be the right choice for myself. Come to find out this bike is very popular and almost a cult for many people haha. So here she is:

I haven't forgot about my 4runner I'm taking her in to tirerack next weekend finally to put some TKO's on it. And looking forward to going to the Illinois jamboree July 25th I believe. Anyway just wanted to have a post haha.

Those 650's were the ultimate Bonneville (in the day). They had the look without the Lucas electric or the oil leaks

According to the guy I bought the bike from it has never burned nor leaked oil since he has owned it back in 85. I'll be putting it to the test to see if it's true. But it really is a pretty sweet look and awesome motor on these bikes

I rode an 80 XS1100 back in high school and I loved that bike. Very similar to its smaller cousins, they had a triple for a while as well. They are very dependable bikes, their is an XS11 in my garage right now with over 60k that still runs fine. Not bad for an air cooled motor.

Can't go wrong with the Yamaha. That looks exactly like the Maxim but I don't know if they were just a step up from the XS or different year models. I hope you feel guilty because you definitely stole that

Not too bad It looks like I will have to possibly replace the front shocks. But other than that yea it was a good deal.

Why are you needing to replace the front forks??

If they are just leaking fluid, it usually only needs some new seals, fresh oil, and good cleaning of the internal components. I imagine the springs are pretty soft if you are anything above 150 lbs, so it may be smart to go ahead and plug some stiffer springs in there while you have them apart.

If you can pick up a service manual the work itself is pretty simple.

awesome. The guy I bought it from gave me the service manual so I should be set. I'm having one of my buddies help me work on it this weekend.

This gas mileage is amazing it took 1.9 gallons to fill up at the pump and that should take me a good 110 miles. I still had more left in the tank when I filled up but I didn't want to push it.
