That looks like the v8 box in the pictures. Should be similar but I know lots of v8 owners can just remove the box and put their arm through the hole to push it up from the bottom.

I have the v6 model, it takes a min to remove the hydrocarbon filter using a knife.

I don't think that it is a "replacable" item. It is plastic-welded to the inner snorkel, and does not appear to be replaced. In a quick search, I don't see it available.

Just thought i should mention i also removed my Carbonhydro Filter back in December 2009. I guess i got bored and thought i would give it a try. I kept it for a latter use if i ever wanted to throw it back on as it sits right back in its place.I immidiately noticed nothing as of better exceleration at first but when i filled up my tank i was pleasently surprised to see my average mpg go the highest i ever seen them when i reset it coming home from the gas pump. I was getting 33 then it went down to 29-28-27. It stayed there for about 5 minutes going up and down some hills with not much pressure on the skinny pedel going aboiut 50 mph. The trip from the gas station is about 12 miles.It final stop around 24.5 and i was like what!! I usually always get right at 19 to 19.5 mpg a mix of about 10 miles city 15 highway i go about 70 mph. It stayed around 24 then it went down to 23 and now it stays around 22-23 sometimes 21.5 with the daily driving mentioned above. Still it gets around 2-3 mpg's better. More air better mpg and more power. I do notice that it feels a little more umphy when i give it a little gas but it did befor as well. Hard to tell about the power. But i did the real mpg test by dividing the miles on the odo with the amount of gallons and i am indeed getting 2-3 better on an average.

I am adding some pic's for the members and viewers with the V6 engine. This is a really easy mod if you decide to do so. I just used a flat head on the 6 rivets and it popped right off:

I am leaving the mesh on. I think it will keep anything from getting down in to the engine if it ever got through the air filter. Like chuncks of dirt,mud, sand build up,small sticks and what not. It is a good protective barrier and i go wheelin in the Carolina woods every other weekend. Stuff gets nasty out here quick aspecially if it is a little wet. An easy trail can turn in to a challenge with the varying weather we have here. I do plan on putting a TRD CAI on one day but right now everything is pretty much stock aside from the HCDelete. Yeah, i would keep the mesh on it serves it's purpose but the Hydro Carbon Filter not so much. Unless you are really concerned about a little bit of gas vapors burning up and getting in to the atmosphere but i think it is ironic that here in the south they still let people out in the country burn there trash outside. Stinky, oh yeah and i did notice now with the filter gone i do not get as much of the sulfer smell but it is still there if you get on the gass on a hill or for any other reason. Just keep that back window up or get a side exhaust system mine is still stock with the resonator coming out the back.

Guess you talked me outta it then. the most off-roading I do is mudding and you are right on how it can change. I too am also getting a intake either TRD or AFE.

That's probably not a good idea. If you don't know what it does, don't you think it would be better to leave it in? I'm not 100% sure myself, but it might be similar to the mesh screen in a MAF, which helps smooth out the airflow as it goes over the sensor.

Besides, I doubt removing it will do anything for performance or fuel economy.

I just looked at the path with least resistance, you know. I thought well it has the air filter and that should be enough and I look at the any cold air intake and they don't have that. but your right very little if anything could be gained without tuning and better hardware.

You have me sold on this one. How thick is the filter on the v6? I'm going to try and carefully drill mine out (drill out the plastic rivets) just in case I have to put it back in if the dealer says anything about it. I figure I can always super glue it back in place if I just drill a neat hole.

Just did mine as soon as I got home. I first pulled the 20amp EFI fuse (as per CJ3flyer, thanks!) then I drilled out the rivets carefully just so I could put the filter back in if needed (warranty/dealer issues). I used compressed air to clean off the plastic savings before pulling off the filter. Then after I pulled the filter off I cleaned the shavings inside. Closed it up, put the EFI fuse back in (left it out about 20 minutes if that).

Note there is a 10 amp EFI 2 fuse too, I had to double check this thread to see which was the correct one, the 20 amp EFI.
