Insurance & Glass Coverage
So as most people know, people can buy car insurance that covers glass.
Having said that, I have a cracked windshield and don't have glass coverage with GEICO. Now if I add glass coverage to my current policy, it's only $7 more per policy period (6 months). If I add the coverage, would they require my car's glass to be inspected before they begin coverage ?
The reason i'd like to do this is due to simple math --- $250+ for a new windshield > $7
Also - do premiums increase because i made a glass claim, even though the policy would cover glass ?

Most likely they will look at it first.
As far as insurance rates going up if you make a claim - it's possible because every company is different and their policy varies. If you haven't had any claims with them in the past and make one for the windshield because you had damage after the policy was in force it probably wouldn't. But, if you've had a series of claims, even minor ones, they may raise your rates.

Ive had the car for 6 years and never had a claim, since the crack is a bout the size of a quarter, i think i'll just put krazy glue in it and put a sticker on top of it if they want to inspect it before coverage .... i'll wait a month or 2 and then claim the insurance :-)
i know when i first switched to geico 2 years after i bought the car, they wanted to inspect it within 30 days of starting the new policy ...... but they didnt inspect my older 4runner when i switched that one later on... maybe cause it was considered an "old" car ...

A quarter size might be pushing it, but for $50 or so you might be able to get Safelite (or similar company) to fix it for you.
I guess the thing to remember is it's not just a windshield - it helps with the structural integrity of the vehicle too. I wouldn't mess with it too much, especially if the crack is starting to travel...crazy glue isn't going to hold it.

I'm sure you'll never get caught for this and your company probably won't even want to inspect before the damage is fixed, but just remember what you're doing is technically insurance fruad and could be severly punishable by law if someone wanted to make a fuss about it. It is completely against any contract with any company to make a change with known damage to mislead and then gain coverage after the fact. Just FYI.
Just remember all those that happen to do this add to the overall cost of insurance rates increasing to a certain degree. Just like anything in this world those who steal or cheat the system always pass on the cost to even themselves and others indirectly.

Here in Arizona, the standard question when getting insurance is to see if you want the glass coverage too, with zero deductable. I've never had my vehicle inspected prior to the glass coverage added for all 3 of my vehicles. But I do have to say I've had the windows replaced on both of my newer cars. It's funny my 2 older, mid 90's vehicles never had any window issues, but the 2 late 2000 ones have both cracked right up.

I've never had an insurance comapny inspect my vehicle period before making changes but I have been with the same insurance company for almost 20 years and with windshields as long as you aren't replacing multiple times a year I don't think they'll make a fuss. Also remember most insurance companies still require a deductible when replacing a windshield. I think I pay $6 per year and I pay $100 out of my pocket and I get a new windshield about once a year.

Isn't glass covered on your comp coverage? Mine is, and glass is repleced at 50% of street price, way under a deductable.
Either way, I wouldn't think of filing a fraudulant claim. Things like that have a way of backfiring.

I'm not sure what the size limit is for the repairs, but I get free repairs done through insurance with no deductible as it prevents needing the windshield replaced.
