When I was looking for work back in 2008, I was struggling, so I finally sucked it up and went to ManPower Temp Agency & they found me something almost right away.
Of course it was only temp work/contract, but I was getting paid & not sitting at home.
I was still getting 40hrs/week.
When my contract was over, I got something else through them. I was working w/ the Cirque du Soleil Ovo tour. I wasn't a performer, I was behind the scenes.
Later...I found a FT job at Farmers Agency, I was working as an Insurance Assistant for a friend. Let's just say I'm not longer his friend.
Anywho...back to a brighter note, I got Unemployment, got bored and ManPower called me & found out that I was unemployed. I was foolish for not calling them right away, because they want to place you w/ work.
Anywho...I am working another job through them fulltime and that company now wants to make me Permanent, I think I have to pass my 90day Probation first.
So currently, I'm working that M-F 730-430 GREAT SCHEDULE!! And Part Time Wedding Photography Assistant.
...so the tip I have for you, grab what you can and work toward your dreams/passion...

McDonalds is hiring 50,000 new employees on April 19. Not ideal, but could be something to look into.

Young Guy Seeking Job
Of course, you are young and trying to "find your way in the world" right now.......but you are on the right path, it seems.
If the military is not an option (which would be unfortunate), try to get involved with learning a skilled trade. Diesel mechanics, plumbers, welders, pipefitters, truck drivers (CDL-A or even CDL-B), electricians and HVAC repairmen are in very high demand right now. Many of these are jobs that cannot be done by a machine or outsourced to India.
It also seems that few immigrants (legal or illegal) seem to pursue such jobs, so your chances of staying employed without being undercut are pretty good!
Should you happen to go onto college and get a degree, you will still have a "fall back" option if your plans don't always work out. (HINT: Things often do turn out differently at 30 years of age than we planned it to be when we were 20.)
Good luck.....whatever you do!!!!

Are you any good at working on vehicles? Have an intrest in learning new things? When I was 19 and in school I quit my boring job at circuit city and started working for a pickup truck accessory shop called Trucks Unique in Albuquerque. Its a locally owned shop but I'm sure there are some just like it in your neck of the woods. I started out part-time. About a year after I started the company was crazy busy. I dropped out of college (bad idea) to work all the hours they needed me to. I ended up working there for over 10 years, became a shop foreman, I could knock out front-end alignments all day, learned customer service skills, got a paid ticket to the SEMA show one year, learned to weld MIG, TIG, and stick. Best part was that for many years I could use the shop after hours, weekends, whenever to work on my truck. You could see what worked in the aftermarket world and what didn't. I got so much free stuff from vendors just trying to get their product out and show it. It just paid the bills at first but in the later years I made alot of money. The economy put a damper on things. I got frustrated and left the company. But it was so good for a lot of years. Made a lot of friends who had the same intrests as me.
