Jeeps on Forbes 2011 Worst Cars list
For your enjoyment. Jeep Liberty and Wrangler on the "Worst Cars on the Road" list, how embarrasing for them. No Toyota's made the list, surprised?

Forbes has a list for best/worst vehicles?
I wonder when National Geographic is going to start offering exercise tips or when Sports Illustrated will offer information on crafting...

I dont think any bad review will ever hurt how people feel about wranglers.

Wranglers are the only Jeep that has high resale value. They sell a ton of them and most times they can not keep up with demand. Last year they could not make the hard tops fast enough and were pushing the soft tops. In 2012 they will finally get the new V6 engine and get rid of the minivan engine they were using.

I take no pleasure in the poor rep that Jeeps have and wish that a domestic vehicle could do better. It's funny that I had a 97 Wrangler TJ,first year of the new model, and had not one problem in 75,000 miles. Maybe I got lucky but I'm not lost in the thought that many are prone to issues. I will say that 50% of the reason I bought a 4runner is because of the Toyota reputation of quality.

Unless you really want a Wrangler you will not be happy with it. If you really want a Wrangler you won’t be happy with any other vehicle. I have a 2001 wrangler and for offroading and fun it is hard to beat. For efficiency and economy it is hard to find any other vehicle worse.
The old 4.0 inline six is hard to beat as far as longevity. It is a great motor for offroading. I have laid my jeep over on each side more than once. Half the time I can get up right just by turning the wheel and driving forward or backward. Other then a little ding and a broken side window no problem. The replacement V6 they came out with wasn't that great for offroading, didn't get better gas mileage and even though it had more HP it was a slug. Not sure about the newest motor.
As far as offroading (low speed crawling, tight technically stuff) there really isn't any vehicle that will beat a wrangler (consider cost and availability of upgrades). The four door has a longer wheel base and even the 2 door seems to be more stable at speeds then the previous wrangler (TJ).
My 4Runner could never go places my jeep can go. My jeep will never carry as many people, as much crap and tow like my 4Runner will. I don't think there is a Wrangler that will get the mileage a 4Runner will.
The Jeep Liberty is an ugly undersized pill of poop.

I also have a lifted Wrangler. As you said off road it will go places my lifted 4runner would never dream of going. It has much better approach/ departure angles, ground clearance etc. and is much easier to see out of picking lines through rocks especially with the top off. Its smaller size and short wheel base just gets through tight trails easier. I also like that my Wrangler is older so I do not worry about getting it scratched up and beat up, I am always to carefull in the 4runner. Mine has been pretty trouble free. I think the Wrangler is the only half way reliable Jeep mainly because they do not have a lot of features that can go bad. I do get tired of the zipper up windows on my softop. for a off road and around town vehicle mine works great but sucks on the highway with the softop flapping around. It would not be good for a family vehicle. The 4 door model would be useless to me. If I needed a Jeep that big I would rather have a 4runner.

Behind the Numbers
To determine our list of the worst-made cars on the road, we started with the lowest-rated vehicles from six reliability and performance studies conducted this year by Consumer Reports.
Any car, truck or SUV named among the worst in at least two of those studies made the final cut to be on the "Worst" list.

I think one of the biggest benefits (other than a solid front axle) is that it has much less sheet metal and glass. If you have driven a Wrangler on the trail and then drive n any other vehicle you will quickly understand this.
The tires stick out further than the body and this has benefits, offroad. Also, as you noted the approach and departure angles. You also have a better break over angle with a Wrangler t. Look under a Wrangler and then look under a 4Runner. Dragging the belly of a Wrangler is no big deal but it could be detrimental to a 4Runner.
As fire as zippering window: I use bolts to hold my driver side real window in (yes it is a soft top).
On the jeep my top is ripped a little, window are glazed over but it is a Jeep.
I had a Grand Cherokee before the 4Runner and the grand was MUCH more comfortable then the 4Runner but it sucked towing compared to the 4Runner. The Grand would get about 16-18mpg the 4Runner about 20-24. Towing with the 4Runner I get about 13 and about 8 with the grand.
The 4Runner is great for what it is, so is the Wrangler.
I know quite a few people with the new Wrangler and the only issue I hear is the engine lacks power and terrible gas mileage.

Another thing I like about my old Wranger is I park it anywhere and do not worry about someone dinging my doors. It is also fun for me driving around in nice weather with just the bimini top on and the doors off. Sometimes the crudeness of it is fun. The bad part is I only use it now on the closer off roading trips and use the 4runner for the farther away ones. My wife hates the Jeep. We just got back from a off road trip yesterday in the 4runner around the Crown King, Arizona area. 4runner does great on the milder trails. I spent all day today cleaning tons of dust off the inside and out of the 4runner.
