Uneven wear, different sides, you can only assume that the second dealership would have pulled the wheels and even removed the calipers and did a complete inspection, after all if somebody brings me a pile and says "Do the brakes" I pull the wheels and look @ it, if one side dont need em, pull the other ???? dont need em here either ?? pull the back off , Hell dont need em here either ?

Crap I just wasted a half hour, oh well dont need brakes anywhere,

Gotta do some more digging Tech Jockey the second dealership would not have wasted their time inspecting it and turning it loose without sucking up a little gravy brake job,

I'm flat rate.
I measure pads and shoes.
Just for this reason. If someone comes back and tells me another shop called me out, I can pull up the old R.O., show the measurements recorded, and what's on the car now.
As for uneven wear.... that's a possibility too. Sticking calipers and slide pins and yadda yadda can affect the measure ment in a short time as well.
We still check all the pads and shoes, to help stop this from happening.


Once again, one or the other of the shops is likely wrong.
Either one should be willing to re-inspect, SHOW the owner what's up, and go from there.

Yep good point Rixxer, if the first shop clams up and wont reinspect good sign they know they are in the wrong,
Or better yet a third party ? Maybe Swhabs ?

OP- they will either tell you the tech made an error or maybe they will show you how they measure/ estimate life remaining and sell you the job. Knowledge is power so have them show you and explain their shop methods. I also recommend picking up a repair manual and searching on here how to do some of the basic repairs like pad replacement. Will save you a lot of money and you will learn a lot more about your vehicle.

Good response. In my own experiences I have met both good quality sales reps and mechanics, and the shade tree types. How I take that is this, I'm not going to throw all of Toyota under the bus and say they are trained this way. It is up to the individual to be honest or dishonest. The nearest Dealership/Service Center lost my trust after losing my skid plate accessory. Long story, not gonna bother explaining. After that I went to another Toyota Dealership that's between home and work. I told them about what had happened and the service manager has always gone out of his way to inform me, and let me take a peek when the 4runner is in the shop. I always feel like I'm paying for what needs to be done. They earn my business. When going in for service feels like you are buying a car from pushy service managers trying to earn more commission for BS inspections not being needed, its time to get out.

OP since I don't know how the staff at service center #1 made you feel, I would inquire about the discrepancy between the two measurements. If you felt like they were taking you for a ride, then call them out still being polite. No matter what. Starting off being pissed won't get you anywhere being calm won't when it comes to customer service. If you are still getting the BS from them you can let them know how much of a pain in the ass you _could_ be for their reputation via social media. This is if you want to spend this much time. You don't have anything to lose by putting pressure on service center #1. There's always someone else with higher authority, another manager, a rival service center to bring your business to. My opinion.

@tranny Frank... I get it. Your very first post in this thread had a personal attack on another member and so far you have not really given any constructive advice. You simply continue to ramble on against Toyota. You already mentioned that you are a former Toyota tech and given your anti-Toyota tech banter I can only imagine you left on bad terms. If you continue on your anti-Toyota rant and personal attacks on other forum members you will be reported to the moderators for violation of forum rules.

Knowing your vehicle and how to do the basic repairs is vital. There are times you may not be in the position to afford to pay the mechanic or even be close enough to a mechanic to get the repair done(trail repair). Choosing/ finding a good honest mechanic is not always the easiest chore and will take time with some trial and error. The repair manual does not have to be factory Toyota, it can be a Clymber or Haines manual you get from the local auto parts store. Also on our vehicles if you can change a tire you can change the break pads, and only adds 10-15 minutes a side.

He is NOT a former toyota tech.
He's a former ford mechanic, and he's worked on like 3 toyotas.
