I never understood why people do this. I dont hide my plate when I drive down the street

To answer the question I think you're asking, you open the pic in a graphics program of some kind, alter the pic, and then save it with a new name so you don't overwrite the original pic. All this happens before you post the pic online.

There are multiple reasons people do this:

-In some states, you can go online and get address information reference license plates
-Once armed with the above info, you know the address the vehicle was registered to
-If you perused said vehicle online, and wished to steal it, you would have an address to start your initial search
-Many thieves use internet car forums to find the cars that have all the cool (expensive) internal mods that you can't view from the outside
-Historical note: The Oregon DMV records became private when people realized that you could go look up the address of a poor driver you saw earlier on the road, go to their house, and mess with it. It took road rage to a new level
-Risk management

I don't hide my plate as I drive down the street either. It is illegal. I don't have my email, phone number, address, full name, date of birth or social security number stenciled on my vehicles, but would that be smart?

It must be an American thing because I google/searched my plate # for probably 30mins and came up with nothing.

But I could just remember your number and look it up later.

I get where your coming from, just reducing the likeliness of some one getting your info.

Thanks for the reply, it actually proved my point. When I said I spent 30mins and found nothing, I didn't actually mean nothing. I too found many usless links but nothing relevant. So in the interest of being right, I clicked on all 10 links you posted, here's what I found.

First of, we don't have DMV's in Canada, we have MOT (Minister of Transport) and license bureau's. So anything to do with DMVs is a wild goose chance. Also, the little blurbs above the links tend to say US & Canadian but I couldn't find one website that stated it was for Canada nor did I find one that would allow you to pick a province instead of a state. Also, many of the websites said things like "search vehicle history by license plate" so I don't think those sites are meant to find personal info, it's more for vehicle info but who knows.

Of the 10 links posted, link #1 and #7 go the same website (abika.com) and are a dead ends. #7 & #10 also go to the same website and only have the option to pick a state (no options to enter a province). #2,#4 & #5 also only have the option to enter a state (no province). #3 is just a link to Ask.com. #6 is a link to KBB and that is an American website and doesn't seem like you can search by license plate. #9 is a list of steps which just sends you to websites listed above.
