How much difference between GX460 and 4Runner (2015)

In particular, sound proofing - are there much more damping materials inside the panels of the GX460?

Yes there is, but to what degree I don't know. What I can say is that the wife's GX is way more quiet in regards to road noise than the 4runner ever was. Even when it was stock with street tires.

GX460 base vs 4runner limited

KDSS vs Xreas
V8 vs V6
6spd auto vs 5spd auto
15 city / 20 highway vs 17 city / 22 highway
HID vs std halogen projector

+$500 for park sensor vs std
+$600 for tow hitch vs std

+$7000 for a lexus

If you can do it, it is a pretty sweet SUV. I was haggling a Lexus dealer for a 2014 last September... The lowest I got the guy down to was $47k for one with the starfire pearl white, black interior, tow package, nav package, park sensors. I needed him to come down to $45k and eventually he did. But this was 2.5 weeks after I was driving around in my 2015 4runner limited already.

yes, from what i've been told when i was comparing the GX to the LC for the wife, a friend who works in sound design for toyota said the GX has about .5 times more than the LC and LC has 2 times more than 4runner. he said this was all the the sound deadening technology not just padding and insulation(there's some other crap involved too). plus, it's a Lexus so......

I test drive a '14 GX with the premium package this week and it feels different for sure.

I definitely noticed that it's quieter in the cabin, seems to get out of it's own way better than my 5th Gen LE and I absolutely LOVED the Levinson sound system. It also was equipped with the adjustable suspension, which was definitely cool. I fully enjoyed the experience.

That said, I'm still on the fence between the 2. The 4runner has been flawless so far, but the GX definitely seems to be a step up. They were asking $50k for the GX and offering $36k for the 4runner.

Just can't get over the barn door...

I'm sure the Lexus is even better, but I am constantly impressed with how quiet my 13 4Runner is on the inside.

I agree, the barn door is certainly different, but I like not having overhead obstructions, being a taller (6'2") guy, "I've hit my head on the 4runner lift gate more than once....
Not that that's a selling point in and of itself, but it makes me not mind the idea of it as much.

Having both I would say the barn door is just fine. The only downside is not having the remote rear window to put down sometimes. but then barn door comes in handy too.

IKR? I love the GX platform but the recent front ends on the lexi are ridiculous. Earlier GX460's look ok (2010-2011?)

There have been times when it started raining while my wife and I were in the store and having a hatch rear came in handy while loading bags. Beyond that I couldn't give up the roll down rear window. If the GX had a 4Runner rear hatch we would be looking at a GX.

Can't argue there. Personally I like the body of the t4r over the gx
