2016 gx460

I was throwing around the idea of buying a new GX460 to replace my ’03 V8 Sport Edition so I took one for a ride around a couple months ago. About a month later I drove a CPO LX570, and although it is an excellent vehicle, it did not do enough for me to buy a well-used one over a brand new GX in the same price ballpark. A few days later I took the mrs. to the dealer to get her buy-in so I could pull the trigger on a GX when ready. I had no intention of buying that night, but happened to go to the dealer when they really needed to move a unit, and I ended up buying a new GX460 with NAV and BSM along with a few accessories. I was underwhelmed by the 4.6 when I first test-drove one a couple years ago, but I think it was a combination of expecting way too much from it and the low rpm shifting patterns you see with a lot of newer SUVs that make a lot of sufficiently powered vehicles feel slow. I liked it a lot better when I test-drove it more recently. Now that it is through the break-in period, I can say that it has nice low-end torque off the line under routine driving and reacts well when you push a little extra on the throttle. When you really want it to go, it has plenty. It definitely does not have the visceral feel of the 4.7 in a 4th gen, partially because it weighs around 800 pounds more, but it accelerates just as well (Car and Driver numbers actually indicate the GX is faster to 60) and makes a great 4R replacement if having a V8 is a priority. I am not planning on any mods at this point, but I am considering a different set of wheels with ATs for the winter months. 265/65R17s spin approximately the same circumference as the 265/60R18s that come stock, so a set of 17” wheels would open up a lot of good AT choices. Anyway, I hope to contribute to this sub-forum as I learn more about the GX460.

If you don't mind me asking what sort of price did you get on that vehicle? I am in the market and leaning heavily toward the 4Runner. In my opinion the base GX just doesn't come with enough standard features for the price jump.

You’re ultimately looking at around a minimum of $8K between your best deal on a 4WD limited and a base GX with NAV, BSM, and factory hitch, but it really depends on the dealers you are shopping and your timing. I don’t want to get into specific numbers on a public forum, but I got a great deal compared to what I have seen and heard, but I also think it was based on the circumstances of my purchase. The dealer had a lot of them (no one around here generally does) and at least one more exactly like mine, and it happened to be the last night of a short winter month, so they flat out needed to sell a unit. If features are what you are into, a base GX isn’t the way to go. My wife’s limited has a few things my gx does not have (leather heated and ventilated seats, parking sensors, and fog lights). You can get these things for a few $K more with the premium pkg, but I didn’t want the leather or wood trim, I turn off the parking sensors before I bring the limited into the garage bc I find them annoying, and the upgraded wheels weren’t my speed. The leather in the limited is less impressive than the nuluxe in the GX in my opinion, I have no interest in heated seats and the ventilated part doesn’t do as much as I would hope, and the LED headlights in the GX more than make up for the lack of fog lights. On the flip side, you’re getting a nice v8, very usable running boards, and a vault-like ride that is a different world than the 5th gen. In addition to that, you’re getting an extra year of factory warranty coverage and a free loaner, wash and vacuum with any service. It’s all about figuring out the balance between your priorities and how much $ you’re willing to part with. Send me a PM me if you are seriously considering pulling the trigger on a GX and want some guidance on what to shoot for in terms of price.

Thanks for the response! I'm being quoted about $9K more on the base GX over the 4Runner Limited (no nav, no heater/cooled seats, etc.) and I just can not justify the difference, unless the dealer makes me a much better deal.

That’s way too high. I considered getting one without nav too. As a starting point, the difference between a 4Runner Limited at invoice and a base GX460 at invoice, each with no options, should be around $6K. If you don't want to haggle and you’re seriously interested, contact the internet sales mgr of another dealer or two as a starting point. Also, thru Costco you can get one for $1000 over invoice, which sounds better than the deal they are offering you. If you want to do it the old fashioned way, show up at a dealer that has the one you want, make them an offer for $1000 or so less than what you're willing to pay, and see where it goes.

Completely stock, but happy to share. Also, I am posting a pic of the factory hitch that I had the dealer install in case anyone wants to see what it looks like.

Cargo Mat

I thought I’d post a pic of this cargo mat for those who do not want or need a Weathertech or Husky cargo mat. It’s not heavy duty, but helps keep things from sliding around, protects the carpet/floor, and rolls up easily if you need to use the 3rd row in a pinch and have no place to put a rigid mat. I got this Floor Armor Cargo Mat (made by Kraco) at Sam’s Club for around $15. I’ve had the same one in my wife’s 5th gen for around 2 years and it hasn’t shown any signs of wear.

I traded an 2006 Infiniti G35x with 107k miles (and kept my 2005 4Runner Limited V8) for a 2016 GX 460 w/ Premium option last week.

Silver, black interior. Listed for ~$58,800 and paid $54,500. For the combined 3 to 4 hours I was in the dealership, no one even came in to kick a tire. Just me and a bunch of bored sales types. I think that's why my relentless, but polite, negotiating was tolerated.

I have some guilt about such a purchase, but this vehicle is substantial. Mine for the next 10 years. Interior is wonderful. Vented sets? Thank you.

Still - headlamp washers, folding mirrors? OK...

I do feel a little more 'wander' in the steering wheel than the 4Runner. But, it is a quiet, quiet ride. Can't wait to get through break-in period to step on it.

The roof rails ARE lower than the shark fin antenna and I have to take a road trip with the Thule box in 2 weeks. But, I think I can squeeze the rails closer to accommodate the box. I hope...

Poor timing - the 4Runner is making a humming sound in front, louder than the motor unless I step on it. Quiets down on sweeping right-handers. But, that's for another thread...

Husky Weatherbeaters

These Husky Weatherbeaters showed up today. I was between these and the Weathertechs but went with these based on some of the reviews I read in the 5th gen section. It sounds like you can't go wrong with either product. Also, these are the exact model that they sell for the 5th gen 4Runner, but I posted pics since I couldn’t find any in this sub-forum (in a GX).
