Wtb gx470/gx460

Had a 4Runner and sold it, bought a long travel Tacoma and I’ll be selling it soon, just a little too rough and uncomfortable nor my old fat ass.

Educate me on 470/460’s, is there factory lockers available? Looks like a real transfer case is standard, am I right? What else should I look for or stay away from? I plan to mod the suspension and use it regularly in the Colorado mountains to go where no man should take a Lexus Wtb gx470/gx460

If you want to mod it heavily for off-road, buy the GX470… far more aftermarket parts are available for that truck. Another plus is suspension components are compatible with the 4th Gen 4Runner giving you a ton of options including long travel kits. This has pretty much been my plan from the start… moving suspension from my 4th gen to a 470 when ready.

The 460/470 both have a real transfer case with low range… very similar functionality to the Land Cruiser / Limited 5th Gen/ and 4th Gen variants being able to operate in AWD or 4WD (Torsen center TC with the ability to lock/unlock the center). The only thing “missing” is the ability to operate in 2WD which was typical of the 4th gen. 4th Gen allowed unlocked (AWD) low range operation, my 5th Gen Limited force locks in low range, I suspect the 460/470 is the same.

Factory locker I am not sure about… might have to add aftermarket. With a lot of mods and larger tires, an opportune time to re-gear and add lockers.

I really like the 460 as well, but the aftermarket hasn’t matured yet. Still a really nice way to go, just as capable but has a lot more city-centric flare you need to deal with when modding.

The 4.7 engine has better low end torque than the 4.6. The luxery addition has air suspension. I think the Premium has springs? But anyway, the upstroke is lacking in the rear. I.E. you hit the bump stops, a lot, as in 40mph on the average Kolorado roads with no load in the car. I don't think any of them have a full skid plate on the gas tank, only covers half the tank. But it's the same old truck as the runner and the Taco, just on steroids, and wearing a tuxedo. Lots to like about it, but they sure missed the boat on some simple stuff.

I can totally see where you're coming from having owned a 4runner and then a Tacoma. The Tacomas are great trucks but feel a lot more unrefined compared to the 4runner and GX models. However, the GX models are so much nicer due to the standard V8 and the standard Lexus luxury amenities. The 470 is basically a Prado 120 (4th gen) and the 460 a Prado 150 (5th gen 4runner). They all have standard 2 speed transfer cases with full time 4wd. Some of the 470s and most 460s have KDSS which is not too much an issue when installing aftermarket suspension systems. There is probably a ton of threads in the forum that breakdown the major differences between the two models. At the end of the day, both are awesome trucks, have lots of power, are super reliable, and can be wheeled hard when equipped right. Good luck!

hey there! i recently bought a 2006 GX470 w/150K miles on it... here are my thoughts on first gen (ie. 120-series 2003-2009):
- afaik, no factory lockers available on GX (first or second gen)
- first gen vvti models have been known to suffer the AIP/valve stuck open issue. not sure if it's real or just internet hype, but AIP bypass kits are available and a good preventative measure.
- gotta watch out for rust... and the GX suffered the same fate as a lot of toyota/lexus models of that gen - cracked dash!
- rear air bags... comfy, but definitely has a shelf life, so either need to replace airbags eventually, or can just go with coil kits
- unicorn GX's are the kdss equipped NON-NAV versions... non-nav allows you to easily upgrade to a modern double DIN headunit, instead of medieval technoolgy from mid-00's... the non-nav conversion is a royal PIA
- i'm sure there's way more... but that's just top of my head stuff

honestly, i was going to buy my brothers 2004 t4r se v8, but SURPRISE SURPRISE he wants to keep it (at least for the time being...). he is the original owner, and i was waiting for a while for him to sell, and it just wasn't happening. anyhow, just to be different, i decided to go with a GX. still love his t4r, but i really like my GX... luckily i found one with a nice clean undercarriage (i.e., no rust) but it must have sat in the sun forever. all the rubber was dead, so i replaced the door belt mouldings, front inner door panels, wipers, and like i said the dash is cracked. had to also replace the radiator, but the PO replaced the timing belt and water pump just before selling (common maint). otherwise, just been collecting fun parts (like suspension refresh/upgrade, tires, etc.).

my wife actually has a 2015 GX460, and my 470 feels a lot more peppy... but obviously hers is nice and fresh, and mine is a little crusty!

i'm not sure if this is frowned upon, but i got a lot of info from ih8mud gx forum:
