5th Gen 4Runner vs GX470

Well, I’m back to the 470 for the time being. Pricing on the 460 is pretty outrageous. I mean, you’re paying $22k plus whether it has 95,000 miles or 195,000 miles. Finding a decent priced one (my build is going to cost about $8,000) means finding one with a sketch history.

I’ve found three very intriguing 470s that I can pay cash for and fund my build right out of the gate.

Plus, idk, the 460 is just so vanilla looking. The 470 has way more character but kinda reminds me of my mom’s Kia Sorento from the front. Ugh...

Interior on the 460 is miles ahead both in design and build materials. The 470, stand alone, isn’t bad and has aged very well with black or gray interior.

Calling around today...decisions, decisions.

I agree the update on the body style on the 460 is atrocious. If it wasn't said before, the 4.7 is nicer to drive than the 4.6. It just makes its power at lower RPM. Makes for a more pleasant power delivery. I guess a pedal commander can help the programing, but still the 4.6 likes to rev to get its power. That means your foot is in it a lot more. Since I drive with two light feet, I found the 4.7 to be more pleasant. I have paid the bills for driving with two lead feet, so I don't any more.

Thanks for this info! A lot. The gas mileage is better on the 460 because of the extra gear. I’ve heard and read plenty about the fact that the 470 doesn’t require premium but the mileage is poor. So trade offs I guess.

Coming from the 4.0 L 6 cylinder of the 4R, I’m used to having to lean on the gas to make it move. The V8 will hopefully give me what I’m lacking. I’m going to check one out this afternoon.

I've had my '04 GX470 for 8 years now, tracked every tank of gas via Fuelly.com, my average is 14mpg, 2/3 city driving, 95% regular grade fuel. The newer vvti engines might do a bit better on fuel economy, but premium is recommended.

We recently bought a GX460 to replace our 5th gen 4Runner, and I agree with the comments that the 470 makes better power at low RPM's, which is nice for city driving.

Thanks for your insight! I’m flying out to Virginia tomorrow morning and buying a 460 with 110,000 miles at an insanely good deal. I’m hoping it’s going to be as good as the 4Runner, just more upscale. I’m excited to mod it and I have big plans already. My wallet is already running scared!

Regarding power, I see they offer a pedal commander for the 460 as well. A friend with one on his Runner claims it made a world of difference in responsiveness and overall enjoyment in driving. If I feel like it’s lacking, I may go that route. I have a 700+ mile and 14.5 hour drive home to figure some things out.

I have a Sprint Booster in our 5th gen 4Runner (same idea as a Pedal Commander), and it does make a world of difference in that vehicle. My driving in our GX460 suggests it would benefit from one as well. I've never felt like the GX470 needed it though.

Awesome first hand info from someone with sound experience in all rigs.

Great...I’ll add a pedal commander/sprint booster to the lengthy mod list. My wallet is seriously pissed at you right now.

I flew all the way out to Virginia from Illinois only to find the 460 I was going to buy is busted AF and totally misrepresented. So now I’m stranded out here for a day and without a new rig. Ugh. Why do people suck so hard?

That really sucks. Hard to do a fly and drive/ride for that reason. I feel your anger.

I got the dealership to, in writing, agree to pay both flights and hotel. We’ll see if they follow through. I’ve done deals like this so many times. I can’t even remember the last time I bought a local car. This is the first time I’ve been burnt so I guess I had a gold run. It has me second guessing the 460 vs 470 thing now though.

My take is, the 470 is a more pleasant engine to drive. makes its power at lower RPM. The 460 makes more power, just harder to get since you need more RPM to get it. But slightly better gas mileage. both will do the job, take the best bang for the buck instead of worrying about which powerplant.

Thanks and I appreciate all of the input. Both rigs are simply incredible. I’m flying down to Houston to snag a 460 in the coming days. As much as I wanted the extra money immediately for modding, the continually rising prices on the 470 have it well into comparable mileage territory of the 460. When comparing the two, the 460 is just miles ahead in features, interior materials, styling and happens to be a better size for the family. Plus having a fixed rear window after loving every minute of the 4Runner’s roll down just sucks. At least you can prop open the 460’s window. After all the drama I’m hoping I found the right rig. Plus zero rust from a Texas owned rig in rather enticing.

If your getting it from a swamp in texass, look closely and make sure it wasn't a flood car. Houston in known to flood occasionally. The fixed window isn't as nice, and the rear door is a bit awkward. We don't find it terrible, but sometimes a bit inconvenient.

Great advice. The carfax is super clean and it’s extremely well maintained. Nothing showed on there. Any other way to tell?

Super cleaning or detailing might be a clue. I expect a bit of road grime, even in a non-winter climate. Then check under the dash, the lip that makes up the structure. Should be a bit dusty, but not dry muddy. Same with any other place that mud might collect and not easily wash out. If in doubt, ask to sample the oil from the diff's and T case. Should be used and possibly a bit dark, but if milky, it has water in it.
