Great thread... I'm kinda in the same boat as I have been considering a GX IF the new Bronco doesn't meet my needs or if the next 4Runner takes forever AND I don't like it.
My issues with the GX are only the radio/nav unit not being able to be replaced with known aftermarket unit and the cargo door. I'm with everything else like the suspension which I know has some aftermarket quirks but honestly I would only lift it slightly and get a more aggressive tire. I would also purchase used with last several months they have been sort of easy to find in the Northern Va area.

Just my .02: I thought the transition to the "barn door" was going to be a bigger adjustment than it actually was. If your cargo door opens up or sideways, it's all really the same thing.

The only thing about the 4Runner that I actually miss is the roll down rear window. That's it.

The stereo situation is actually a pretty big deal, I had a 5th gen 4Runner before this that I replaced the headunit with a Pioneer carplay unit, and it was excellent. Trying to find solutions to add carplay to the GX460 now, and I've just installed a GROM VL2, the mic doesn't work so they're sending me a new harness to try. Beyond that, it crashes, and does all kinds of glitchy stuff, it's just never going to be something I can expect my wife to use without having daily issues, and it's likely going to come right back out.

You are right, how sweet would that be if the GX had the power back window like the 4Runner! Although, flip up glass is a nice convenience.

I am actually beyond satisfied with the ML sound system. No need to make any changes there in my opinion.

Agree. The ML system is absolutely killer... it was a must-have feature for me. A few people who have been in my car so far listen to it and its like

I'd love to have a GX instead of our 2016 4Runner. To a degree I regret not getting one in the first place.

Now is the time to get one! Great incentives if you can find the combo of your liking combined with a high trade in value on your current 4Runner.

Short term update: things I miss from the 5th gen 4Runner include, lighting upgrades availability (4R had HID lows, DD SS3 fogs), stereo upgrade availability (4R had Pioneer Carplay headunit), rear hatch/roll down rear window.

That is all, but some of those are pretty major things IMO.

I initially wanted to buy the GX, but after test driving it, I opted for a 2021 ORP. For the price, I wish the interior was updated. I know the 4runner isn't that much better, but apple car play is huge for it especially when it already comes with the car and just works.

I don't see a reason to choose 4R if not offroading seriously.

And I see no reason to choose GX if offroading seriously.

Just curious, coz we don't get land cruiser in Canada. I thought it would be the perfect option if you struggle between 4R and Gx?

Land Cruiser/LX570 is larger and a lot more expensive. Hold its value better than the GX. Thirstier. More space, but not really efficiently done. It's like a mid sized pick up compared to a full size. Like Ranger compared to F-150. The gX being mid size, the LC/LX being full size.

After after 4.5 years with X-REAS in Limited 4Runners and ~6 weeks with KDSS in a GX 460, I can't understand why Toyota even still builds X-REAS.

KDSS is just as good - if not better - on road, and doesn't completely butcher your ride quality like X-REAS does.

KDSS also seems to be more reliable long term...
