My Niece and her husband have never broken 20 mpg in their 4 runner TRD pro. they wonder what's wrong. I keep telling them its the driver.
WE usually use mid grade fuel, instead of premium. But we live at high altitude, so the extra octane probably isn't necessary .

I’m very fortunate to have both a 4R ORP (me) and a GX (wife) A 2020 and 17 respectively.

I truly enjoy the 4R, fully equipped overlander. The wife likes the 4R but hated the V6 when she test drove one. So she got the GX. Since I’ve got the opportunity to drive either one each day, I’ve got to admit I love that V8, the ride, and some of the creature comforts. And seeing all the aftermarket overlanding gear for the GX… I’m tempted. However…

As previously mentioned, I can’t stand the rear door. I might reconsider if it swung toward the curb side. I asked my service manager about why the way the rear opens… big seller in countries where they drive on the left. Curb side for them.

And then yes, same MPG as the 4R. But premium unleaded… one thing the we both don’t like.

I just drove a 2018 GX 460 (Premium) and a '17 4R (Limited) at a local dealer back to back. The GX was actually a few thousand cheaper as it had almost twice as many miles (80k miles vs 40k), and I was really expecting that I'd vastly prefer the GX.

While the V8 in the GX was definitely a much smoother engine and the interior was a nicer place to be, I was very surprised when I preferred driving the 4R. I found the GX to be very floaty on the road and it felt like you were driving a much bigger vehicle. I also liked the looks of the 4R much more and really wanted the roll-down rear window.

GX 460
----------
+Smoother Engine
+Significantly nicer interior (materials & comfort)
+3rd row if we ever needed it
-Ugly exterior
-Floaty, boat-like ride
-Worse cargo w/ seats down
-(Slightly) worse fuel economy
-Barn door/no roll-down window

4R Limited
----------
+More nimble handling on-road
+Better cargo capacity (no 3rd row)
+Traditional gate w/ roll-down window
+Significantly more attractive exterior
-V6 is just ok performance-wise
-Boring interior

It was still a tough decision, but I ended up going with the 4R and have been very happy!

I’m in the verge of trading my 16 4R Trail for a 14 GX 460 Luxury. We shall see.

The 2022’s are much more tempting as I really did struggle with the idea of a $60k vehicle in 2021 not having CarPlay.
Ultimately, if copacetic with the front end of the GX, I would have a hard time choosing a 22 Limited.

I will also say the random compliments go way in the 4R’s favor. Never owned a vehicle that so many compliment.
Really do miss the steering wheel in the GX though.

Gx in Moab this last week

Had a 06 4th gen 4runner with the 4.7. Was rear ended and totaled. Now have 13 gx460 and loving it. Still working on things but had some fun in and around Moab this last week. The gx did great with the mods so far.

Some boat. Torn between 5th gen 4runner and GX460

Hey all.
I currently have a 2006 4runner sport that I have had for about 7 years. It has been one of my favorite vehicles, but I am ready to get something a bit different. Initially I was cross shopping the 4th gen 4runner to 5th gen and noticed there are some significant features missing. The big ones for me are the auto climate control and center diff lock. I am aware I could get these features in the limited, but I'm not a fan of 20" wheels on a truck or the front end look. In mountain driving I have never thought the v6 engine was adequite, but it was a decent compramise for how great the truck is overall. These are the things that led me to start looking at the GX460. I love the idea of the v8 with 6 speed in the mountains. I do offroad a fair amount getting to camping, fishing, hiking, and backcountry skiing spots, but not as a hobby. I would probably do a mild lift, tires, and not much else.

My main question is for the 5th gen 4runner people. How do you get around not having the center diff lock? The manual states you are not supposed to use 4wd in situations where the tires are not allowed to slip. In situations like highway driving transitioning from dry pavement to snow/ice and back? In the past, I have always tried to be in 4wd before I needed it. Also, any opinions on how much of a hindrance the 2014+ GX grille is for rugged forest service road type driving. I am currently leaning towards a 2010-2013 GX, but these are getting harder to find. After that any opinions of which might fit me better would be greatly appreciated!

4th gen 4runner Sport:
  • Pro: Auto climate control
  • Pro: Center Diff Lock
  • Pro: rear seats fold flat for camping
  • Pro: Pioneer stereo with apple carplay
  • Con: No leather in my sport.

5th gen 4runner:
  • Pro: Can replace stereo/add apple carplay
  • Pro: Third row is an option. Can spec without. Seems slide out tray version does fold down flat??
  • Pro: leather is optional and can be specced. I wan't leather as it seems easier to keep clean of dog hair.
  • Con: No center diff lock without limited. Can't run 4wd on dry pavement or mixed conditions.
  • Con: v6 with 5 speed is underwhelming.
  • Con: Don't like front end on limited or 20" wheels.

Lexus GX460:
  • Pro: V8 with 6 speed. I want this!
  • Pro: Leather and interior quality
  • Pro: Generally better cared for and garaged.
  • Con: Can't replace stereo for Apple Carplay. Need to use Grom.
  • Con: Third row takes up space
  • Con: ground clearance slightly less. Can add suspension lift.

The gX is just simply a LOT more car. That said, it is heavier and taller with a softer suspension. So expect it to not be as sporty handling. I think somebody already mentioned that.

Last year I was on the hunt to come back to a 4Runner, by trading in my 2016 Tacoma. I had stumbled across the GX platform and had driven a few to end up settling on a 2017 GX460. I honestly cannot say that I regret the upgrade. It's definitely smoother and great for longer road trips as nobody in the family has complained yet. I look forward to modifications in the future.

My wife likes the GX460, but still prefers a 4Runner if she is driving as the GX does seem slightly bigger.

You can't expect the gX to drive like a 4 runner. It's approximately the same frame and axles with "possibly" the same or similar suspension, depending on the model. With a bigger body that weighs more and is taller and slightly higher off the ground with taller tires. So its not going to drive as nimble, or sporty feeling.

I have similar anecdotal experiences to most that posted. Own both 4Runner and gx. Both are great and definitely have lots of pros and cons that would somehow make an incredible 4x4 if you could make one vehicle out of both… but the 80 series already exists haha.
That being said if I had the choice I would go with the gx, later models, every single time. While both are similar the fit and finish, ride quality, driver seat position, and overall driver views having a proper seat rather than sitting on the floorboard is much bette than the 4R.
I love my 4R but the road noise is wildly louder compared to my (wife’s) gx.

Have had my new to me GX for almost 2 years now. Now has 78000 miles, had 38k when I purchased it. Sold my my 16 Trail 4runner with 130k on it, then bought the GX. So far it has been awesome!. Cargo space seems smaller but I was able to fit two decent size mule deer bucks in the back with the seats folded down. One was quartered the other was just field dresses. Also fit a quartered elk with a 6x6 rack. I can say that the GX has been just as capable as the 4runner was. Down side is, I could use a bit more departure and approach angle. I still have a Ironman stage 2 lift on. Rides much more smoother than the 4runner. Hence the term " The Limo" as my hunting buddies call it. They like the smooth ride and are completely amazed by the off road capabilities of the rig. I get plenty of stares during elk, deer, and pronghorn season, especially when I have the the antlers from tagging out, on the roof rack. I do have the CC and MTS mod in the GX.

I just have a couple comments on your pro/con list between the 2 contenders:

4Runner
-Con: v6 with 5 speed is underwhelming. - Adding a Sprint Booster of Pedal Commander to recalibrate the drive by wire makes a HUGE difference in how the 5th gen 4Runners drive, goes a long way to bridge the gap with the V8 in normal driving. Actually feels like it has the power it says it does on paper without having to drive it like you stole it.
-Con: Don't like front end on limited or 20" wheels. - We had a '15 4R Ltd. and the first thing I did was swap out the wheel/tires for 17's, made it look and ride much nicer.

GX460
-Con: Can't replace stereo for Apple Carplay. Need to use Grom. - Check out Beat Sonic for wired and wireless Carplay solutions, the GROM unit is glitchy garbage IMO.

Having owned both a 4R Ltd. and a GX460, I can say the overall quality of materials, sound deadening, and comfort is much better in the Lexus, as expected. I have zero regrets going from the '15 4R Ltd. to a '15 GX460.
