USA Today Review

Lexus GX 470 has a living-large feel
Goodness, the Lexus GX 470 is a sweet truck to drive: comfortable, classy, quiet, quick.

No surprise. The GX is mechanically similar to the 2003 Toyota 4Runner, also a delight to pilot.

GX is a new model for Toyota's Lexus luxury brand, slotting between the car-based, $35,000 Lexus RX 300 and the truck-based, $62,000 Lexus LX 470.

SUVs are a lone star in a darkening sky. Their sales this year are up 5.7% vs. last year, according to Autodata, while total new vehicle sales are down 2.4%.

Though GX is based on 4Runner underpinnings, the two SUVs were developed by different chief engineers, so they have some major differences:

Body. 4Runner looks like the truck it is. GX features Toyota's generic SUV look, in which Toyota Highlander looks like Toyota Land Cruiser looks like Lexus LX 470 looks like GX 470. And GX's tailgate opens sideways, like a door. It's hinged on the right-hand side, which can be inconvenient for loading in some situations.

Price. GX starts at $45,500, including standard V-8 engine and four-wheel drive (4x4). 4Runner with V-8 and 4x4 starts at $30,790. The Lexus has more standard features, and you buy it from a dealer who's probably nicer. It's up to you if that's worth a $15,000 premium.

The difference can be more. If you don't need the V-8, or the 4x4 system, the V-6, two-wheel-drive version of 4Runner went on sale just this month starting at $27,715.

Seats. A third row is optional in GX, not available in 4Runner. The third-row seat comes with rear air conditioning and is priced $2,030.

Lexus claims the way-back row will seat three, but it'd be a squeeze. To get the seats out of the way, you have to fold them flat, then fold them against the side of the truck, then fasten them there. Too much rigmarole for a $50,000 SUV. The luxury SUV owner probably prefers one-finger convenience. Lexus says the third row can't fold down under the floor because the beefy truck frame is in the way. A unibody model, such as Honda Pilot, has more space underneath that leaves room for a nicer folding-seat arrangement.

Ah, but there's plenty good about the GX seating arrangements, and a lot else.

The front seats, especially, ravish both the eye and the rump, cosseting the body in sculpted premium leather. The GX chairs are, for many physiques, a new standard in automotive comfort.

The engine starts with a touch of the key, as in 4Runner. No need to keep the key twisted; a light turn and let go.

The wood-trimmed gearshift lever beckons the palm, snaps precisely into the chosen gear and invites you to move off smartly.

The 4.7-liter V-8, used in 4Runner and other Lexus and Toyota models from the workaday Tundra pickup to the Lexus LX 470, gurgles and begins a low snarl as the gas goes down. It's remarkable how briskly it will accelerate the 2.3-ton truck — standstill to 60 mph in 8.5 seconds, Lexus says.

Whether bustling along urgently or burbling serenely, the GX steering and brakes seem well-programmed. They make the truck do just about exactly what the driver means for it to do, which has become a nearly lost art.

The adjustable suspension has four settings, from soft and cushy — not quite mushy — to pleasantly firm. It's a useful span. The firmest setting helps the hefty truck cope well with corners, and it gives truck purists a tiny jiggle now and then to remind them they really are in a truck with a frame. In a midway position, the GX suspension lets occupants quickly forget they are in a truck and glide along on car illusions.

The test drive included a snowstorm and an ice storm. The 4x4 system performed well in both, despite partial reliance on traction control. Too much dependence on traction control is ruinous. It takes over too soon and cuts engine power to keep the wheels from spinning. GX's system allowed the wheels to spin a bit before intruding, and that's as it should be.

You can drive the GX confidently in most any weather, and you'll be happy to, because GX seems supremely capable.

The GX gets extra credit for details.

- The floor console has not only two decent cup holders, but also a cubby behind them that can hold more beverage containers if necessary or can be a toss bin for PowerBar wrappers and gas receipts.
- Stereo controls are exceptionally simple, even when you get the optional navigation system. You can do almost everything you want using a real control rather than toggling through distracting and aggravating choices on the navigation screen. About all you need the screen for is to use the radio station push buttons. What a fresh breeze from GX — simplification and common sense.
- A hill-descent control keeps downhill speed to a crawl in low-range. If you're stopped pointing up a steep or slick hill, another device prevents the truck from rolling or sliding backward.
- Space around the driver is arrayed to minimize knee bumping and foot tangling. You'd be surprised how many nice vehicles don't do the space thing very well.

The GX could be better.

The radio looks cheap, eroding the high-quality presentation of the interior. The CD changer takes space in the glove box, instead of being housed in the dashboard.

Styling isn't great. It's classy compared with its 4Runner cousin, mainly because the GX cladding's more tasteful, but the GX is too Toyota-generic. Get the guys who crafted the visually exciting Lexus SC 430, and make them think "truck."

GX, though, can transcend its flaws once you're behind the wheel. It is a fantastic melding of attributes, resulting in a truck that befriends you immediately.

It's as if you have — ah! — finally found the vehicle you've always wanted to drive. The one that makes you feel as if you're living large, cruising along high and handsome, ready for anything, deprived of nothing.

Hey all,

After reading the brochure on the GX, i found out that the GX470 has sweep the off-roading magazine awards!

It has won:

1. FourWheeler of the Year, by FourWheeler Magazine;

2. 4x4 of the Year, by Peterson's 4-Wheel & Off-road.

You just can't ask for anything better than that! It has beaten out many formidable competitors, including Hummer H2 and Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.

Impressive.

Hey all,

Here is a picture of the Mark Levinson speakers in the GX:

Here is a description of the excellent sound system:

Mark Levinson Speakers

14 custom designed speakers, appropriately placed in the GX470 cabin provide proper sound coverage:

Two front door .75" titanium tweeters and two 2.5" metal cone midranges are located as high in the door and mirror sail as possible to improve imaging for the front and second seat. The new metal cone 2.5" midrange speaker provides lower distortion and higher power handling for improved sonic performance and coverage in a large cabin. Imaging also is improved because of the extended lower frequency performance of this new metal cone speaker.

One .75" titanium center channel speaker to locate and stabilize the soundstage above the instrument panel and improve imaging in the passenger seat. Also, the center channel speaker provides proper reproduction of movie sound tracks similar to a home theatre system and assists in second seat sound reproduction.

Two new 6"x9" low frequency front door speakers provide greater low frequency extension from the important left and right front channels. This allows for better bass performance in a large cabin with both music and movie sound tracks.

Two .75" titanium tweeters and two 6.5" midranges are located in the rear doors.

Because of the system architecture above, the 6.5" subwoofer with IVE installed in the right rear quarter panel only handles the lowest octave. These frequencies are non-localized and do not disturb the tonal balance of the system in the second and third seats.

The two 2.5" metal cone speakers in the rear hatch satellite provide rich, well balanced music reproduction in the third seat, as well as create an ambient "surround" atmosphere for movie sound tracks, similar to a home theatre system.

Mark Levinson Amplifier Processor:

Biamped front left and right channel systems
Four channels, 120watts, of bandwidth-limited amplification power the two most important channels of the GX470 system. The advantage is low distortion, non-fatiguing music and movie sound track reproduction, capable of filling the large volume passenger cabin.

ML1 DSP Discrete Processor/Power Amplifier as used in the award winning LS430 and SC430 Mark Levinson Premium Sound Systems. Eight channels, 240 watts of discrete amplification for low distortion, high output music and movie reproduction in a large passenger cabin.

DSP equalization with proprietary software application tools provides for digital domain adjustment of frequency response, time alignment, filter type, order and Q. Volume, loudness and speed compensation are also performed digitally within the ML1.

Custom GX470 system voicing created for "on the road" listening allows each seat to be the "best seat in the house" with both music and movie sound tracks.

The Mark Levinson Premium Sound System was designed and voiced specifically for the acoustic environment of the GX470. Our system approach addressed the distinct characteristics and challenges presented by this cabin. We employed well founded electrical and acoustical engineering principles in the system design, sophisticated DSP hardware and software in the system execution and most importantly, allowed for the trained human ear to be the final arbitor in voicing the system for the highest level of on-the-road music and movie reproduction.

Here is the CAR & DRIVER recent SUV comparison, with the GX470 coming in second:

SUV Comparo

Second Place
Lexus GX470

Let's see now, current wisdom says you can't convert a pickup chassis into a proper civilized sport-ute, especially one aimed at the wine-and-cheese crowd. But tell that to the Lexus brain trust, which somehow managed to meld a Tacoma-pickup-size chassis complete with a live rear axle and a Tundra-cum-Sequoia V-8 into the truly splendid GX470. The result feels like a short-wheelbase version of the LX470, one of the ne plus ultra of SUVs. It also packs a ne plus ultra price tag, especially when loaded to the gills as was our $53,435 prototype, with $5475 worth of unnecessary DVD video, Mark Levinson audio, and Lexus Link telephone gear.

Although the Lexus failed to lead the pack in any of the performance categories, it finished on the podium in the dash to 60 mph, through the quarter, and through the lane change. It also clambered over hill and dale with the tread-lightly grace of a Rover. It was the GX470's balance and general sense of quiet competence that impressed this crew of test drivers, especially when coupled with its superb cruising capabilities on the highway, its full roster of features, and its traditional Lexus level of fit and finish.

THE VERDICT
Lexus GX470

Highs: Silky V-8 and suspension, surprising muscle for a luxury SUV.

Lows: So-what body cladding, instrument panel by Remington 20 gauge.

The Verdict: Another home run for the Lexus lads.

If it has limitations, they are in the towing department (a 5000-pound capability versus 7700 for the winner) and less than sumptuous comfort levels for three passengers in the rear seats, although perhaps extra credit is due Lexus for offering the only three-place third-row seat (a $2030 option). Some also felt the external styling, with its GM-inspired body cladding, fell short in pure aesthetics. Complaints were also recorded about the complexity and scatter-shot placement of the controls.
Aside from these niggles, the GX470 acquitted itself in dazzling fashion in all aspects of the test. Said an enthusiastic staffer, "I like the feel of the Lexus. Great seats. Terrific ride with the adjustable shocks set in comfort or sport mode. The exhaust sounds are wonderful!" Said another, "Great off-road vehicle when the differential is locked up and the suspension raised. This thing will hill-climb! On- and off-road manners make a great combination."

Enough said.

Carefully remove the center dash display cover panel (black or wood grain) from the multi display/radio (use the rounded end of a bottle opener to pry it gradually and gently or you will break one of the 8 locating clips) Unplug the clock connector at the bottom and set the cover aside. Remove 4 Phillips screws from Multi Display panel and balance the entire unit on the shifter. Careful not to let anything scratch the touch screen. Locate grey connector (no need to disconnect) on back of unit top row (directly inline with front side temperature up and down button) then locate VIOLET wire, cut it about 2 inches from connector and tape off the two cut ends. (This eliminates the speed signal turning off the video) Next locate red/white wire in same connector and also cut it BUT leave about 4 or 5 inches or so of wire remaining at the connector side. NEXT strip

Lexus Leads Luxury SUV Category With Three-Model Strategy

The 2004 Lexus RX 330 is an integral part of the three-model luxury utility vehicle strategy that has made Lexus the leader of this category. The all-new GX 470 introduced for model year 2003 is a full-capability V8-powered SUV positioned between the RX 330 and the premium-luxury LX 470. The two new-model introductions and a revised LX 470 give Lexus the youngest line of luxury utility vehicles in the industry.

"The concept of 'luxury utility vehicles' aims to clearly describe to consumers what Lexus produces, promises and delivers," said Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager Denny Clements. "Lexus luxury utility vehicles not only symbolize power and prestige, but their upscale, aspirational image and generous luxury appointments set them apart from other automotive makes."

Lexus was the first full-line luxury brand to offer a luxury utility vehicle, with the launch of the LX 450 in March 1996. Within two months on the market, it had surpassed the Range Rover in total unit sales. With the addition of the RX 300 in 1998, Lexus became the leader in luxury SUV sales, and since then, has been able to capture 26 percent or more of total luxury SUV sales.

Over the years, the luxury SUV market has changed dramatically. Several luxury brands have adopted a two-SUV strategy or expanded the variations available on one model. The segment continues to expand, adding both traditional-type models and crossover vehicles based on passenger car platforms. The luxury SUV segment has grown from just under 90,000 units in 1997 to just over 322,000 in 2001, and is expected to reach 580,000 in 2005.

"Lexus broke new ground when it launched its first Luxury SUV more than six years ago," said Clements. "At the time, there were doubters - including the competition - who questioned whether a luxury brand could successfully expand into sport utility vehicles. Today, the competition is following our lead."

With significant growth of new product entries, the luxury SUV category segmentation has grown to mirror that of luxury sedans, with entry, mid-size and premium luxury models. Brand loyalty in the luxury category is highest among SUVs, strengthening the business case to offer three different models. Each of the Lexus luxury utility vehicles appeals to distinct customer needs and desires. Moreover, each of the three models fulfills a distinct role in the brand's line, with little or no overlap in pricing.

RX 330: New Generation of Entry-Luxury Crossover Pioneer
The 2004 Lexus RX 330 succeeds the RX 300, which had remained the best-selling model in its competitive set right through its final season.

Launching an SUV first in the premium luxury class helped to create brand aspiration and spur demand for a lower-priced model. However, Lexus recognized that a high-volume model would attract many customers who would be moving out of passenger cars, and so it would need to provide passenger car-like ride and feel. With the launch of the five-seat RX 300 in 1998, Lexus created the template for today's entry luxury SUVs.

Based on a passenger car/SUV "crossover" platform, the RX 300 was the first luxury brand vehicle to truly combine SUV versatility with the performance and comfort of a luxury sedan. The RX 300 quickly became the best-selling luxury SUV in the market and helped grow the Lexus brand significantly.

The 2004 RX 330 builds on the successful formula of the RX 300, giving loyal customers more of what they loved about the original while providing additional technology and luxury content that have helped to make Lexus the No. 1 selling luxury brand in the U.S. market. Direct competitors include the Acura MDX, BMW X5 3.0i, Mercedes-Benz ML320 and Volvo XC90.

GX 470: Mid-Size, Full Capability
The 2003 GX 470 fills a gap in price and capability between the car-based, entry-luxury RX 330 model and the premium luxury LX 470. With body-on-frame construction, V8 power and seating for up to eight passengers, the GX 470 is conceptually similar to the LX 470. It offers more room and greater towing capacity than the RX 330, and its innovative four-wheel drive and advanced dynamic control systems help give it the capability to navigate rugged off-highway terrain. Lexus expects to sell more than 20,000 of the new model in 2003.

The GX 470 is slightly smaller than the LX 470. Its standard equipment and options give customers a taste of the luxury that's available in the LX 470. The off-road system unites several advanced technologies to give the GX 470 the kind of off-road capability that customers in this segment have come to expect.

The GX 470 will attract new customers to Lexus. It also will provide a new choice for previous RX 300 owners who are looking for greater vehicle capability but want to remain within the brand. Competitors include the Mercedes-Benz ML500, BMW X5 4.4i, Land Rover Discovery, as well as the larger Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator.

LX 470: Full-Size, Premium Luxury
The eight-seat LX 470 is a premium, full-size, full-capability model that will remain a relatively low-volume flagship in the Lexus luxury utility vehicle strategy. Its body-on-frame construction, high-torque V8 engine, sophisticated chassis and four-wheel drive provide uncompromised off-road capability for customers who need it, without sacrificing the smooth ride quality that Lexus customers expect.

As a flagship model, the LX 470 is a technology leader. Adjustable Height Control suspension debuted on this model, for example. For 2003, the LX 470 introduced a new optional Night View System that uses near-infrared technology to help enhance nighttime driving visibility.

The LX 470 has also been something of a model for others to follow, with more competitors introducing full-size luxury SUVs in the past few years. Its key competitors include the BMW X5 4.6i, Land Rover Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz ML55 AMG and G-Class.

CNN Money Review of GX470

Lexus GX 470: a tranquility vehicle
The upmarket version of Toyota 4Runner has plenty of cushy appeal.
By Lawrence Ulrich, CNN/Money Contributing Writer

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - As SUVs go, the Lexus GX 470 is the equivalent of a hot dog with everything. That is, if the condiment choices included black truffles and caviar.

If you like your trucks plain, the GX -- and its $54,230 tested price -- will strike you as luxury overkill. Check out the terrific Toyota 4Runner instead. It's a close mechanical cousin to the Lexus, including its 235-horsepower, 4.7-liter V-8. Yet the 4Runner Sport I recently tested started $13,000 below the GX's $44,925 base price, and cost nearly $20,000 less out-the-door.

That kind of premium raises the question: How much luxury and technology do you need, and how much are you willing to pay? The glass-half-full crowd may judge the GX a relative bargain compared to the $70,000-plus Range Rover. No doubt, this Lexus is a superior STV -- Sport Tranquility Vehicle -- with all the performance, comfort and luxury anyone might wish for. It crams in so many whiz-bang features I'm surprised there's room for passengers:

- Stray from suburbia, and the downhill assist control lets the GX tiptoe down steep slopes with no need to touch the gas or brakes. When it's time to climb, the hill start assist control keeps the GX from rolling backwards until you're underway.

- Full-time four-wheel-drive features a trusty Torsen limited-slip differential – similar to the Audi Quattro system – to manage power and limit wheelspin. A low-range setting and lockable four-wheel-drive give the GX serious off-road skills.

- An adaptive suspension lets you flip a switch to soften the ride or choose a sportier feel. (Though the firmer two of the four settings seemed to harshen the ride without doing much for handling). Air springs can adjust the ride height over a 2.8-inch range, higher for off-roading, lower for easier loading and passenger step-up.

- The full Lexus roster of electronic braking, traction and stability control systems, along with front, side and head-curtain airbags, are standard.

Optional goodies include a 14-speaker Mark Levinson audio system and first-rate Lexus navigation system that accepts voice commands. And some technological help for back-seat drivers: A separate rear seat CD/DVD entertainment system -- complete with a pair of wireless headphones -- also lets passengers manage the navigation system via remote control and monitor the display on a 7-inch flip-down screen.

One extra to avoid is the third-row seat with its separate air conditioner ($2,030), which lets the GX carry a purely theoretical eight passengers. I've argued that midsize utes are just too small to force in a useful third row, and the Lexus is a particularly cramped example. (Some critics dubbed the Ford Explorer's third row the "dog seat," but even Fido might feel he was being punished in the GX's hindquarters). Compared to the Ford's back bench (which carves out space through its clever independent rear suspension) the Lexus offers 10 inches less legroom and three inches less headroom, though the Lexus' seat is wider.

The undersized chairs rest mere inches off the floor, pushing your knees skyward. Erecting or folding the seats is a Rube Goldberg operation that involves extending legs, pulling knobs and fiddling with straps.

No such complaints from the front or second rows, where the Lexus impresses with its wood-and-leather-clad comfort, spacious cabin and generous sightlines. The ride is plush, the five-speed transmission so smooth you'd swear it was lubed with hollandaise.

Lexus GX 470
• Vehicle type: Front-engine, 4wd, midsize SUV
• Engine: 4.7-liter V-8, 235 horsepower, 320 pound-feet torque
• Fuel economy: 15 mpg city, 18 mpg hwy
• Base price: $44,925
• Price as tested: $54,230

With a prodigious 320 pound-feet of torque, the silky V-8 pulls the GX from 0-60 mph in about 8.5 seconds, quick for a nearly 4,700-pound SUV. As you'd expect, the GX develops quite a thirst, at 15 mpg city/18 mpg highway; I managed 16 mpg overall.

Like its Toyota sibling, the GX handles with surprising precision for a hefty truck built on a traditional truck-style steel frame. Manhattan streets proved an ideal playground for the big Lexus, with cabbies giving it a wide berth and drivers of lesser SUVs shooting envious looks. A tight turning circle makes the GX easy to maneuver and park in close quarters.

The GX was equally at home in the nighttime wilds of northern Westchester County, utterly secure and planted despite a sudden coating of sleet on narrow, wooded lanes. And my off-road excursions in the similar 4Runner left no doubt that the Lexus can roll up its linen sleeves and take on genuinely rugged chores.

That dual nature is exactly what the purveyors, and buyers, of luxury trucks have in mind. For the rest of us, the GX's price may be steep -- but for SUV social climbers, likely worth the exertions.

Road & Track Short Review of GX470 & RX330

Lexus GX 470 & RX 330
New near-luxury SUV and more power for No. 1

Lexus GX 470

It makes economic sense and is an obvious decision for Lexus to use the recently introduced Toyota 4Runner as the basis to build its new GX 470. The GX offers Lexus loyalists and potential new customers more choices by filling in the gap between the brand's near-luxury RX and the premium LX sport-utility vehicles.

The GX 470's chassis is reinforced with box sections and nine crossmembers for extra strength and rigidity. The front suspension is a double-wishbone design with vertically mounted coil-over shocks for better ride comfort and reduced steering vibration. At the rear, there is a 4-link live axle incorporating air-filled reinforced rubber springs to minimize road noise, vibration and ride harshness.

The air suspension can also be adjusted to increase ground clearance for off-road excursions. Based on road conditions, driving style, vehicle load and attitude, the GX's Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) manages the damping at all four corners for maximum control.

Powering the GX 470 is the same 4.7-liter 32-valve V-8 engine found in the premium LX 470. It is capable of producing 235 bhp at 4800 rpm and 320 lb.-ft. of torque at 3400 rpm. The 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission is also shared with the GX's larger sibling. For the first time, Lexus is using a Torsen limited-slip center differential to control the GX's full-time all-wheel-drive system.

On the outside, the GX 470's family resemblance is obvious. The signature grille leads the way for the tall body and narrow greenhouse look. Like any other Lexus, the GX's interior is luxuriously furnished. Both the instrument panel and the doors are generously covered in leather and fitted with genuine bird's-eye maple trim accents. All the gauges are large and easy to read, and they reside in a smoothly sculpted instrument cluster.

Despite the current trend for manufacturers to build SUVs based on car chassis, Lexus has decided it can hold true to its original truck-based sport-utility roots with the GX 470, keeping its first-rate off-road abilities but refined to offer capable on-road dynamics at a price around $45,000.

By Tom Incantalupo
Newsday

Toyota doesn't custom-build SUVs, but, with a total of seven in Toyota and Lexus dealerships as of last fall, it seemingly offered one for every taste.

Why, then, has it added an eighth for 2003? Because the carmaker believed there was too big a gap in Lexus dealerships between the hulking $64,000 LX 470 and the smaller RX 300, whose prices began at about $35,000.

And so, for 2003, we have Mr. In Between, the GX 470, beginning at about $45,000. A little smaller and perhaps not quite as capable off road as the LX, the GX can do almost everything it can do and, in some cases, outperform its pricier brother because the GX has the same engine but is considerably lighter than the LX.

The GX even gets slightly better fuel economy, though it's not likely to be named truck of the year by the Sierra Club.

The RX, by the way, is now called the RX 330, reflecting a redesign for '04 that included an engine of larger displacement. The RX, one of the so-called crossover SUVs with carlike construction, shares its basics with the Toyota Highlander.

The GX shares its basics with the Toyota 4Runner. The LX 470 is the Lexus version of the Toyota Land Cruiser.

Like most large SUVs, the GX feels heavy and somewhat clumsy in the driver's hands, and, although it is comfortable, it isn't much fun to drive. To a greater or lesser extent, that goes with the territory when you're talking gorilla-class SUVs. That said, the GX's handling is acceptable. Its ride also is typical, with the usual sway in turns and some pitching over bumps. But, true to the Lexus formula, the cabin is remarkably quiet, even at highway speeds, except for some tire noise over coarse pavement and a slight whine from the drivetrain.

Like the LX, the GX comes packed with mechanical, convenience and aesthetic features. The mechanical ones include engine-speed-sensitive variable-power power rack and pinion steering and four-wheel disc brakes. Another is an electronic suspension that automatically adjusts its firmness so that it's firmer when it needs to help the driver control the vehicle and is more compliant when it can be for a better ride. The driver can manually override the automatic system.

There are front and rear stabilizer bars but, as in most trucks, a solid-axle rear suspension. Despite the latter, I can't recall an instance of wheel hop over bumps during my week with the GX.

Just about every safety feature available in modern vehicles is standard equipment in the GX, including antilock braking, brake assist and electronic brake force distribution.

There are seat mounted side-impact air bags to protect the thorax. Curtain-type side bags protect the head. (Frontal bags, required by law, are there, too, of course.)

The GX buyer doesn't give up much in return for saving $19,000 off the price of an LX, unless said buyer values snob appeal, plans serious off-roading or has an affinity for Bird's Eye Maple trim, which, in case you were wondering, is not frozen and does not resemble any vegetable. The GX's wood interior trim is called simply "wood."

The 4.7-liter V-8s in the GX and LX both are rated at the same 235 hp. Both vehicles' have five-speed automatic transmissions. The 4,675-pound GX, however, makes it from zero to 60 mph in a respectable 8.5 seconds; the 5,590-pound LX needs 9.7 seconds.

The GX is EPA rated at 15 mpg city and 18 highway; its gas tank laughs at $20 bills; at today's prices, two sawbucks raise the needle to the halfway mark. The LX is rated at 13 and 17. Both vehicles engines prefer premium gasoline.

The GX has a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a manually lockable center differential. The LX has the same.

For off-roading or deep snow, the LX offers 9.8 inches of ground clearance, 1.5 inches more than the GX.

Also important in off-roading are the approach and departure angles, which indicate how steep a hill a vehicle canclimb or descend without scraping its bumpers. The LX's maximum approach angle is 32 degrees vs. 30 for the GX, so it can go up a slightly steeper hill. The maximum departure angle for the GX is higher, though - 29 degrees vs. 26 for the LX. Both the GX and LX can tow 5,000 pounds.

The LX is 4 inches longer and 2 inches wider than the GX, which translates to more shoulder room than in the GX and about 13 cubic feet more maximum cargo room. The LX offers 2.4 inches more legroom than the GX for its third row occupants, but the GX beats the LX by about the same amount in legroom for the second row.

For maximum cargo room in both vehicles, one folds the second row and removes the third. The third row seats also can be folded and strapped to side walls.

As in most Toyota and Lexus vehicles, the GX's interior reflects thoughtful design, with most controls simple, well located and intuitive in their use. However, with an optional navigation system as in my tester, some climate and stereo controls are hidden behind the map, which has to be wiped off the touch-sensitive screen before those controls can be adjusted. It was annoying but certainly not a deal killer. There are a couple of extra audio controls - as well as cruise control switches - on the steering wheel, but they're impossible to locate at night while driving.

Electro-luminescent gauges are bright and very readable day or night.

Options in the tester raised its price to $54,230. The nav system is packaged with an upgraded Mark Levinson stereo for $2,700.

A rear-seat DVD entertainment system added another $1,560. The third row of seating costs extra and is packaged with rear air-conditioning for $2,030. The last major option on the tester was the "Lexus Link" roadside assistance and travel concierge system, for $1,215 including one year of service.

Overall, this new SUV is worthy of the Lexus name, one that has come to be respected in America for its well-documented top-drawer product quality and dealer service.

There are some tough competitors worth considering, though, for the GX 470 - BMW X5, Acura MD-X, Infiniti QX4 and Mercedes-Benz M-Class, to name the major import brand models.

Cadillac and Lincoln, respectively, offer the Escalade starting at $54,500 with all-wheel drive and the Navigator at $52,600 with four-wheel drive, but they're significantly longer vehicles and have higher entry prices.

The Chevy, GMC and Ford versions of those SUVs - Tahoe/Suburban, Yukon/Yukon XL and Expedition, respectively - are less expensive, but Chevy, GMC and Ford are not luxury brands with bragging rights and kid-glove dealer treatment. Ditto Jeep, maker of the Grand Cherokee.

Lincoln's Aviator, on the other hand, would seem be the GX's most direct domestic competitor. Based on a Ford Explorer, it is 5 inches longer than the GX, about the same width and its 4.7-liter engine delivers 67 hp. more than the GX's engine, though torque for the Aviator is 20 pounds feet less, at 300. The Aviator begins at about $43,000 with all-wheel drive and freight; a more highly equipped "premium" version starts at $45,865. For what it's worth, I was favorably impressed with the Aviator described in this space Nov. 8.

And for something completely different, there's the Hummer H2 in the same price range. Each of those competitors has its strengths, and, when one considers them, it becomes easier to understand why Toyota/Lexus decided it needed SUV No. 8.

By Bob Golfen

The road was rough and rocky, laced with sharp dips and steep inclines, enough to rattle your teeth in most vehicles.

Not so in the Lexus GX 470. The up-market version of the redesigned Toyota 4Runner, the new-for-2003 GX was able to strut its stuff through the desert mayhem with poise and stamina, and a compliant suspension that soaked up all that nastiness.

While the Lexus was doing all the work, the people inside were busy marveling at how well it performed and how well it smoothed out the trail. Actually, it seemed rather incongruous and even bizarre to be crunching this high-end status symbol through the washes. Statistically, few drivers will ever experience the GX or any other sport utility vehicle in this environment or anywhere more challenging than a dirt driveway or parking-lot speed bump.

Too bad. Despite its luxury style and trappings, the GX is a rugged vehicle equipped to take the abuse while still delivering the kind of highway ride and handling demanded by upscale SUV drivers.

What it is:

The GX 470 is a new midsize sport utility vehicle for Lexus. Though based on the chassis of the 4Runner, the GX has a completely different body, interior, engine, suspension, drive system and features. Just slightly smaller than the Lexus SUV flagship, the LX 470, the GX fills yet another niche in the broad lineup of sport utilities for Toyota and its luxury division. With an optional third row of seats, GX boasts eight-passenger capability.

Engine and transmission:

The most striking difference between 4Runner and GX 470 is the ultra-smooth 4.7-liter V-8 that powers the Lexus, delivering 235 horsepower along with a stump-pulling 320 pound-feet of torque. This refined, 32-valve engine pulls the 4,675-pound GX as if it were a lightweight, while still being docile in traffic and unobtrusive on the highway.

Even under hard acceleration or climbing a steep grade, the engine is remarkably quiet. Gas mileage is in the hopper.

Handling, drivability:

Here is a shining example of how electronics has changed our world and provide the GX with remarkable capability and flexibility. The full-time four-wheel-drive adjusts for wheel spin and steering input automatically. Climbing a steep hill with loose stones, sand and slick bedrock surfaces, the Lexus adjusted easily, crawling uphill with minimal fuss.

The suspension rises and lowers, making it adaptable for off-roading and can be made softer for comfort or stiffer for handling. There also is an Adaptive Variable Suspension system that continuously changes each shock absorber according to road conditions, speed, steering and braking input and general vehicle movement, while preventing front dive in braking or rear squat in acceleration.

There also is Downhill Assist Control, which allows the GX to creep down the steepest incline without braking; Hill-start Assist Control, which keeps the truck from rolling back when starting on steep grades; Vehicle Skid Control, which uses throttle and brake inputs to help avoid skids; Active TRAC traction control, which provides the extra traction of locking differentials; Brake Assist, which boosts brake pressure during panic stops; and Electronic Brake Force Distribution, which applies the brakes evenly to each wheel.

On the road, the GX drives and handles as a Lexus should, civilized and nicely behaved. The sport setting for the suspension is best for pavement, allowing the truck to handle sharply and predictably. Variable-gear rack-and-pinion steering, in which the rack gearing gets wide toward the ends, provides quick response and easy maneuverability.

Styling:

Attractive and understated, the GX 470 avoids the chrome-plated excesses of most of the latest luxury SUVs.

Interior:

Lexus always does a nice interior, and the GX is no exception. A very luxurious feel, with soft leather and walnut accents, including a wood-rimmed steering wheel and loads of high-end features. It comes standard with climate control, six-disc CD audio system and a full-range of power and convenience gizmos.

The optional third-row seat has enough space for three people, as long as they're not too big. The seat splits in the middle and folds up and out of the way on either side for cargo loading, although the folded seat halves still intrude on cargo space.

The test truck included a rear video system with DVD player, and a superb Mark Levinson audio system. The optional GPS navigation system includes Lexus Link emergency communication system.

The video display combines navigation, audio and climate controls, a setup that I always find troublesome. There's too much fiddling and switching required for such things as audio or climate display.

Pricing:

The GX 470 is a luxury vehicle with loads of features and priced accordingly. Base price is a significant $44,925. The test truck included the navigation and audio upgrade, $2,700; DVD system, $1,560; third-row seating with air-conditioning, $2,030; trailer hitch, $430; cargo mats, $92; and shipping $575. The total is $52,312.

Bottom line:

GX 470 is another tour de force from Lexus, the best-selling luxury brand in the United States. It combines excellent road manners, full luxury and performance features and real off-road capability. Expensive, but loaded with value.
