470 > 460 I don't really see anything here that makes me want to run out and get one. It does look like a very nice vehicle though - I wish my GX had that damn pop-open glass hatch feature

I will reserve final judgment until I take one for a test drive but appearance wise I think I prefer the front and side profile of my 1st gen GX. I like how my GX has 4 projector lights in front for both high and low beams, looks very high tech IMO, whereas the 2nd gen only has one on each side (although with optional xenons). And from the side I like the large fender flares on the current GX better than the more softly molded in look on the 2nd gen.

Not sure of the actual specs but the 1st gen also looks taller from the side - perhaps the bigger roof rack on 1st gen gives it that illusion, plus I've got slightly bigger tires on my 1st gen then what's on the 2nd gen so that may have something to do with it (265/65-18 v. 265/60-18). I like the choice of 6 spoke 18" wheels on the 2nd gen - they actually look sort of like the 18" 4th gen T4R Ltd wheels that I have on my GX.

I know the soccer moms will like having the built in fold flat 3rd row but here again I think I prefer the 1st gen set up. I like being able to take them completely out which takes at least 100 pounds I'd say off the vehicle and doesn't eat up any cargo volume. I only use the 3rd row maybe 4 or 5 times a year so I like not having to drag that dead weight around - on the 2nd gen it's always there.

The Levinson sound system in my 1st gen is probably my favorite feature and I'm interested to see if Lexus can top it in the 2nd gen. Not really a big fan of the new steering wheel - looks kind of busy and not as elegant as the 1st gen's wheel. Looks like they also got rid of the seperate transfer case lever - where do they expect us to hang our trash bag now? Other than that the interior looks very nice.

Regarding the engine, I know the new 4.6 has significantly more horsepower but I don't think it really has all that much more torque which is what I really feel and can appreciate driving my 1st gen. But it's nice to see that it still at least has a V8 and hopefully Toyota will stick it in the 5th gen as the economy improves.

Just read Thai's Inside Line article linked above and there must be a mis-print here:

Quote:
With the seats folded down, the load floor is completely flat, but there's no under-floor storage, as the seat bottoms slide rearward when the seatbacks flip forward. It's also worth noting that overall cargo capacity is down considerably. In the GX 470, the third-row seats could be taken out, leaving up to 49.7 cubic feet of space. Fold the GX 460's third-row seats and it only opens up 17 cubic feet of space. Space behind the third row is down from 13.2 cubic feet to 4.2 cubic feet.
Only 17 cubic feet behind the 2nd row with 3rd row folded compared to 49.7 in the 1st gen with seats removed? And only 4.2 behind the 3rd row? I'm sorry but that is way too much space to give up for the fold-flat convenience, especially since most folks I know with the 3rd row T4R/GX are like me and use it sparingly.

TORRANCE, California — Expect a hefty price increase on the 2010 Lexus GX 460 over the model it replaces, the outgoing 2009 Lexus GX 470. The 2010 GX 460 will start at $52,845, including a $875 destination charge, a $4,345 increase over the GX 470. The GX 460 arrives in dealerships in late December.

The new GX 460 was unveiled on Monday at the 2009 Guangzhou Auto Show in China. It will make its North American premiere at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show in December.

Lexus said that, for the first time, the GX will be offered in two grades. The uplevel Premium model starts at $57,640, including destination.

In comparison, the 2009 Volkswagen Touareg 2 starts at $49,650, including a $750 destination charge. The Touareg 2 is equipped with a 350-horsepower 4.2-liter V8. The 2009 Acura MDX with a technology package starts at $45,850, including an $810 destination charge. The MDX gets the 300-hp 3.7-liter V6.

The redesigned GX 460 gets a raft of upgrades, including a 38-hp boost. The GX 460 is equipped with a 4.6-liter V8 — hence the name change — that produces 301 hp and 329 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The outgoing 2009 GX 470 is equipped with a 4.7-liter V8 that delivers 263 hp and 323 lb-ft of torque. It is equipped with a five-speed automatic transmission.

The GX 460 also gets a new standard power fold-flat third row seat and 10 airbags, Lexus said. Other standard features include heated and ventilated front seats, 10 airbags, a rear back-up camera and full-time four-wheel drive. Luxury options include a heated steering wheel and heated outer second-row seats.

Inside Line says: A price increase goes along with the improvements to Lexus's top-tier SUV. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

Apparently, this is true...see link above regarding GX460's product info. I guess that is the price you have to pay for having both a fold-flat 3rd row AND a solid rear axle...this is why not many solid-axled SUV have fold flat 3rd rows....

However, Greg, the fair thing is to compare cargo space behind the 2nd row WITH your 3rd row in the GX470 (but folded up) versus GX460 with the fold-flat 3rd row.

Yes I agree it would be fair to compare the 2nd gen's number to the 1st gen with 3rd row folded up as well as fully removed. However, the new 2nd gen's cargo space behind the 2nd row is unacceptably paltry IMO for a 5,000+ lb SUV, only 17 cu ft! I'm starting to see why they finally added an opening rear hatch - you're gonna have to have all your luggage sticking out the back I really like the versatility of the 1st gen's 3rd row - I usually have the left side fully removed and keep the right side folded up and away so I have it ready for the occassional 6th passenger.

Alright now I'm really confused. Here's the cargo volume specs for the 5th gen T4R taken from Toyota's website:

Cargo volume (cu. ft.) behind front/rear seats 89.7/47.2
Cargo volume (cu. ft) behind front/rear seats (with sliding deck) 88.8/46.3
Cargo volume (cu. ft.) behind front/second-row/rear seats 88.8/46.3/9.0

How can it be that the space behind 2nd row is 46.3 in T4R's equipped with optional 3rd row but yet in 2nd gen GX it's supposedly only 17 cu ft?

And here's the info below on 2nd gen GX - it supposedly only has 34.4 cu ft of cargo space with BOTH the 2nd and 3rd row folded down!!! This is significantly LESS than what the 5th gen T4R and 1st gen GX have behind the SECOND row - how can this be right? I'm starting to think Lexus just mucked up the measurements somehow.

Cargo Volume
64.7 cu. ft.
Cargo Volume with 2nd and 3rd row folded down
34.4 cu. ft.
Cargo Volume behind 2nd row with 3rd row folded down
17.0 cu. ft.
Cargo Volume behind 3rd row with 3rd row up
4.2 cu. ft.

Two things:

1. Lexus measurements are always more legit than Toyota measurements...it almost seems like Lexus is held to a higher standard of accountability when it comes to accuracy of its claims. Toyota claims are almost always laughable when you read them!

2. I guess that the fold-flat 3rd row bulges high (when folded) in the cargo area, taking away the vertical capacity of the cargo area???? In the 5th gen 4runner, the cargo floor is much lower (assuming here!) because the 3rd row folds to the side...thus, the vertical capacity of the cargo area is much more. Also, i thought that i read somewhere that the new GX460 HEIGHT is lower than the GX470??

My thoughts....

Good/discussion pics in this thread...

I'm posting this so we don't lose it as it drifts down in the 5th gen section.

Swing door with the flip up glass, similar to the second gen CR-V.

Rain getting in

Looking for some help.
When it rains heavily, and only heavily, water leaks into the vehicle from the 3rd row seatbelt area. It won’t do it at any car wash or light rain. Anyone know how to fix this? Thank you for your help.
