Replace rotors, pads and calipers on a 4R with 50K miles?

Does it sound probable to experts here that an '06 4Runner (4wd) with 50K would require all three (rotors, pads and calipers) in the front replaced?

Toyota Service says rotors warped, pads have hot spots and calipers sticking. Dealer service wants to do that and then replace rear pads (4mm left). With the added costs for bleeding system and claimed "dark differential fluid" also to be replaced, they're asking for over $1,600!

Signs: The truck started shuddering lightly when breaking at around 70+ mph. Not below 70mph. No noise or other signs. This '06 truck is a second vehicle and is never used off road, but was near ocean for 2 years in 2009-2010.

I don't know enough to determine if they're being overly cautious or overly self-serving. I would appreciate any feedback.

Thank you.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but this sounds like about $400 of parts to me. There are several threads on this forum in regards to upgrading the braking system. OP you need to search a little bit. The answer to whatever you want to know is discussed in detail with pictures and how-to steps as well.

Personally, I would buy premium parts and upgrade over the factory stuff then have them installed at a brake shop or do it myself.

Good Luck!

calikev thank you.

Yes, after I posted, I found more resources on this forum at the bottom of my post page. Learning curve. I took my 4R back from service and found an independent shop nearby. Still researching this.

Seems that everyone I found in this forum who had replaced all three (rotors, pads and calipers) had older 4Rs with much higher mileage and debilitating vehicle signs that made driving dangerous.

My Upgrade @ 51,000 miles:

1) EBC 3GD Premium front rotors

2) Hawk Performance front brake pads

3) New front calipers due to rusted frozen pistons.

All DIY and Premium parts paid $500. The braking improvement worth every penny.

Therefore, yea those stock parts can and do go bad this soon.

Can you speak a lil bit about the reason for getting the drilled & slotted?

There are mixed reviews and opinions as to why to get or not get them drilled & slotted

Drilled rotors will get stress cracks. My 3GD's are dimpled but not drilled trough. I brake late and hard (can't stand grandpa style of draging to near 0mph to make a turn). Glazed pads and warped rotors usually result of such abuse. Slots help to vent hot gases out from under pad surface also some belive it may prevent warping if rotor made from high quality iron. Dimples along with slots "scrub" pads surface which prevents glazing. There is a catch - pads wear down faster. I can live with that because brake distance improvement is dramatic compared to stock setup.

Resurface front Rotors

I took the car to another shop today and they said all that was needed was to resurface the front rotors. I still had 6 mm on my front bake pads.

Thanks for the education and feedback yesterday.

Everyones its own. If on tight budget and no need for drastic measures - stock rotors will do fine. Resurf is only temporary fix and warped rotor will more likely to warp again now that it is thiner.
