power steering fluid?

Getting mixxed info. Research says use ATF. Cap on 4 runner says dexron II or Dexron III. Toyota parts says Toyota world standard ATF. So I bought that.

Called another dealership to get more and they told me to not use ATF but to use Power Steering fluid. Said that ATF causes the pump to make noise?

What is it. I'm so confused. This should be such a simple and easy answer!

I asked what came in the car 2006 4 runner sport. they said some jap fluid. It has a yellow brown look to it.

any help would be appreciated. my pump is working rather well and i don't want to mess that up placing the wrong fluid in there.

Just went through this about 2 weeks ago too.

MY dealership said they top it off with regular power steering fluid like Prestone.

When they do a complete flush they use ATF.

I topped mine off with Prestone power steering fluid.

Did a blotter test and smell test. My fluid was clear to yellowish tint, but mostly clear. It smelled like power steering fluid. Supposedly from the factory they use a clear ATF with little smell, but could not substantiate it. Did a lot of googling on it too.

Got an 07 T4R.

i would go by what the cap says.

having said that, you can generally use PS fluid, or atf in the steering system. either works fine.

so the dealer sold me ATF. The bottle says formulated to replace Dexron II or dexron III.

I'm not sure if this was the same thing the prior guy at the same shop told me that what is in their book is Toyota World Standard. I'm not sure what that is. But when i got to the shop the guy tried giving me something else. So when I asked, he brings back Toyota ATF.

The cap tells you to use ATF for a reason.

Dex-lll is ATF, and that is what toyota uses for PS in 4Runner. It will have a color additive (pink) from generic brand and it's fine.

I use Mobil 1 ATF for PS but anything Dex III would work.

Wikipidea'ed this today since i sucked some out and topped off. Wiki,if you trust it says, dexron VI is where GM is with that standard. That is what they use now, and licences to make dexron, II, III expired an now basically dexron, II, III does not exist as such, but in instead as dex, dexmerc or whatever else oil makers came up with for marketing. So it will probably say something like dexron II, III compliant on the bottle, but can't say that it is dexron even if it is.... Make sense yet?

bumpty.

Shall i get the toyota ATF that they sell at the parts store or mobile 1? or no difference?

I'm going with ATF, the manual and cap say it. therefore an engineer put it there not a mechanic. I'm sure there is a reason.

Thanks all.

Topping off conventional atf with sythentic.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread.

Would anyone recommend against topping off the power steering system with synthetic atf when it was filled with what i assume is conventional atf? I bought the 06 used and the service records dont indicate which type was used. Thank you.

You can mix conventional with synthetic. Just follow the service life of conventional till you get 100% synthetic in there. The best route would be to drain all the conventional out and replace with all synthetic.
