Oil Leak from H**L

I have a 1990 4-Runner V6 4x4. The whole undercarriage and engine compartment of the vehicle are covered in oil. Also I am having to put a couple (Usually 3) quarts of oil into it every 3 weeks. I have heard that it maybe the gasket on the back of the oil pan leaking to where it is dripping on the drive shaft and then the oil is getting thrown around.. Does anyone have any ideas of what it could be? Also is this a common 4-Runner issue? Thanks for the help.

This is not a common issue it might be two possibilities. There could be a leakage from somewhere otherwise your engine needs a major service because if it is reducing the engine oil so you have to do the major service of your engine.

There's absolutely no way for any of us to know where your engine is leaking oil from. You've got two options - get a good degreaser and go to town on your motor so you can see where the fresh oil is coming from (a good idea anyway, a clean motor runs cooler and is easier to work on), or pick up one of the UV dye kits from a parts store and find the leak that way.

Once you've pinpointed it, somebody may be able to offer advice on how to deal with it.

I've never used it, but I've never heard of it harming a motor.

The dye will not cause damage. You're not going to use very much of it, and it's designed for this job.

If I was losing 3 quarts every 3 weeks, I would be checking my oil more often than every 3 weeks. That is over half of your oil you are losing.

Running it that low of oil is not a good thing. I run a larger oil filter so I can run an additional half quart of oil. Good oil is vital to the life of the engine.

Never run out of oil
Change the oil yourself so you never run out of oil
Use good quality oil and never run out of it
Keep the oil cool and clean and never run out of it
Never run out of oil

If the point I am making is not clear let me know

Did you find the problem (or better yet - find the fix) that you were having?

If the oil is leaking from around the filter area, you might want to double check that the old filter gasket came off with the previous one...

Just a thought.[/
