That new 381hp 5.7 L Tundra engine has a chain. Finally Toyota finally.

Even my 2003 Camry with smaller 2.4L 4-banger, has a timing chain.

I am 400 miles away from the scheduled timing belt replacement on my 4runner. I will wait out the winter and replace it when it is warm outside (late Spring or early Summer)

Interesting post "grease". One thing I thought was very interesting, since I haven't looked at a V8 4Runner, was the diagram doesn't show any fan pulley. Does the V8 have an electric radiator fan instead of a belt drive one?

Well as it turns out, in the diagram above the part labeled Idler No. 1 is an error in the factory service manual. Idler No. 1 is the viscous coupled fan.

There is no electric fan on the V8 engine. I like these viscous fans as they are far more reliable than an electric fan. Plus the viscous fan is variable speed so there are no worries about losing fuel mileage. No fan motor to go bad and no fan relay to go bust. I currently have 2 vehicles with electric and 2 with viscous fans.

The one thing that I can not find is the water pump pulley. Could the fan pulley be the water pump pulley? I can not see well enough outside in the dark and the service manual is not clear about it.

I checked the manual, and you are right, the item marked Idler No. 1, is the viscous coupler for the fan, which is mounted on the water pump. Which is the usual method for mounting the cooling fan on an engine. Not the first, and I am sure not the last 'typo' we will find in the manuals.

Before diverting this thread from V6 (see the title) to V8, please take V8-related discussion to the existing thread for the V8 serpentine belt. That will make it easier for members in the future to find the information they need. Thank you.

v6 2004

Is this the same for the 2004 model? I have the high pitched sound. Pep boys says i need to replace the belt and tensioner. I have only 29k miles so would this be covered under warantee? If not, is it an easy job and how much is a tensioner? Where would I get it?

Should be covered by warranty.

04 V6 Belt Replacement Notes

I just replaced my serpentine with a Gatorback (Autozone - $29) and it took bout 15 minutes.

The worst part was wedging my arms in around the fan shroud, pulleys, and other surrounding stuff while trying to remove the old/reroute the new belt. Other than that, don't be too proud not to sketch/print the diagram as it easily gets confusing. I thought I had it and whewwww, I was all kinds of messed up so I had to resort to the diagram...sniff.

The tensioner on the V6 was easy (relatively speaking) to "loosen" with one hand while I was routing the new belt (use a ratched and #14 w/o an extension). I don't see how a second person would have any room to help as previously mentioned.

Note: as common sense as this will sound, make sure the belt is IN ALL THE GROOVES. It's easy to overlook! On two of my grooved pulleys it was one groove off. It prolly would have corrected itself, but it might not have.

There's my 2 cents. Happy Easters everybody!

I just replaced mine about a month ago with the same belt from Autozone on my 04. It is even easier to check the routing when you can just open the hood next to you.

Yeah, that would have been nice and easy...as long as you do them one at a time, haha. Nice 4Rs.

Some immediate help neeeded.

My Runner is sitting in the driveway, with the serpentine belt hanging off of the fan. Do I have to remove the fan? There's no mention of it...and well... I'm completely lost at the moment.

Removing the fan might make it easier to put the belt on, but I don't believe it is necessary. Just follow the belt routing diagram under the hood.

You didn't mention if you had a V6 or V8.
