I have an 03 4Runner sr5 in New York. Never garaged and it shines and gets mistaken for a 5-8 year old model lol

I feel like its a love-hate relationship man. I enjoy the process of cleaning the car, but the amount of time it takes vs. local car wash spots is just insane. Then God forbid the water drys too quickly on the windows, its like OCD mania.

I hear you! You may want to look into a deionizer. They aren’t terribly expensive. Use it for your final rinse and let it air dry and you have a spot free wash without drying by hand.

I highly recommend a clay bar treatment once a year if not twice, you will be amazed at the contaminants it pulls from the paint especially from what you believe is a really clean car! Just use a baggie over your hand and rub on the paint after a wash and if you feel grit it’s time for a clay bar.

What would you do if you had a brand new 4Runner from a cleaning/protecting aspect?
Beyond the basic car washing instructions, when is it time to think about paint protection, wax, polish, or an alternative? What would you recommend based on experience?

I would think it's never too early to start the wax/protection process. There are several quality retailers out there, I've been using Zaino on my vehicles for the last 20 years, with a few things from Griot's Garage. Good luck.

Agreed - paint protection right away. Rather than waxes, there are lots of spray ceramic sealants out on the market that will last longer than traditional waxes. Would HIGHLY suggest you pursue an option like that. Good ol fashion hand wash and a spray ceramic sealant will take you a long way.

No need to polish car yet - would advise against. Think of your clear coat as only being so thick. You don't want to 'dip into' the clear coat to remove scratches when there are minimal scratches on a new car.

Check out Chicago Auto Pros YT a channel for a great dissection on paint protection on new cars. From ceramic coating to paint protection film.

You can/should polish a brand new car to remove minor defects from the factory paint job/swirls etc. you don’t want to protect an imperfect surface. The amount you polish away is very very minor. Professional detailers will measure paint thickness before doing any work.
