That is one of the reasons I don't ever like to buy used vehicles. I think the reason you follow the manufactures break in recommendations is because their engineers designed the engine and they manufactured it. With that in mind, they might actually know more about how it should be maintained and broken in then some fellow with a web page on the internet. JMHO I alway follow the manufactures recommendations and if I do modify anything it will be toward more frequent maintance intervals, using superior approved products.

Pitbull, that breakin stuff may work for performance bike engines, but I'd be careful with an automotive street engine. You're dealing with different designs, materials, engine speeds and loadings and expected engine life. The factory schedule works just fine, been tested and tracked in lots of fleet operations. Only question, like in previous posts is when to do that first oil change, what brand of filter and what oil.
One thing left out in his discussion of break in is the engine start up for the first time. There you get the engine running right away (no grinding on the starter) and take it to 2,500/2,700 rpm and hold it there. Camshafts are the worry and they get most of their oil from crankshaft splash. That is left out of the discussion on break in and is very important. So in a street engine it stands to reason that you should avoid running at idle speeds as much as you can for the first couple of days of operation. Just a though if you are trying to do the best that you can for your new 4Runner.

Larry I have to agree with you. On the first change, I'm kinda old fashion. I did the wifes Z at 1200 miles and then at 4000 and the last time at 7000. On the 4runner I did it at 1800 then I just did it again at 5000. I will continue to use dino and OEM filters every 3K on the Z and 3.75K on the 4runner. I use Castrol GTX 5w30 in the 4runner and Mobil drive clean 5w30 in the Z. I like clean and new oil better than long drain intervals with synthetics. I don't drive in bad conditions so nothing is being stressed. If I towed with my 4runner or operated it in below "0" or above "100" I would use a good synthetic like Mobil 1 but still change it every 5K miles. JMHO PS - people like to buy my used vehicles.

About a week or so after I get my new 4Runner I am going to be driving from Mississippi to NJ. Is this going to be bad for breakin or ok? Also, I thought changing your oil after 1,500 miles from purchase was wise as this the possibility of small metal flecks/shavings that might be in there, because of the engine being new. I know I had to do this on my motorcycle, so I thought it would be the same for an automobile.

Just make sure you do not drive at a steady pace. Slowly vary the speed up and down and don't hold the same speed for any length of time. When you are traveling at higher speeds for a while, slow down gradually for your stop and let the engine idle after stopping only about a minute and then turn it off. Drive off from a stop without flooring the gas. Don't get stuck in a position where you have to idle for any period of time. After 1k miles, then have at it.
All this care may not be required, but it may help and can't hurt. I know I drive like that for the 1k miles and had an early trip from San Diego to Palmdale (really hot desert) in the heat of August. It just made me feel better to follow a break-in plan.

oil changes
ok people i have just put 8800 miles on our 05 4runner . We have changed the oil every 2500 miles . So it will get its 4th change in1200 miles . It has run awsome from day 1 . I get great gas mileage and awsome performance . Oh did i mention we have only had this suv for 5 weeks !!!!! We are still on vacation going from upstate NY ,via Illinois , via Big Bend Texas , via Grand Canyon AZ , via Joshua Tree CA and ending up in Eugene OR . We just left Arizona and holed up in Blythe CA . We are hauling approximately 600 lbs of gear , 2 mountain bikes and 2 black labs . We could NOT have picked a better vehicle to try this with ! Except for the Havalina running us outta BIg Bend its been a flawless trip .

WOW'sers! You are going to drive that new '05 4runner into the ground quickly huh. You already have 8800 miles on an 2005 4runner? Geez, I've had my '04 4runner for just over 7 mos. and only have 3200 miles on the darn thing. I'm going to take it in for an oil change on Monday or Tuesday following Xmas. I didn't want to do my first oil change until 3500 miles. The Toyo manual recommends 5k miles but I will do the first at 3500 and then 4000 thereforth.

breaking in a new vehicle
ok i am in Oregon now . The 4runner has almost 12,000 miles on it and is still running awsome . Me and the wife are both New Yorkers so we tend to beat on our vehicles more than most but not as much as some . I switched to synthetic motor oil immidiately and have changed the oil every 2500 miles (give or take 100 miles ) . We have driven on every type of road condition immaginable from NY via ILLINOIS via BIG BEND TEXAS via GRAND CANYON AZ via MOST OF CALIFORNIA and up the coast to SPRINGFIELD OR . YES all in one trip . Just the wife and 2 labs and every inch of space including a roofrack with THULE carrier and 2 TREK BIKES on a bike rack on the back . As for beating the truck into an early grave . DOUBTFUL with proper service and normal TLC this SUV could last 200,000 miles or more . STILL getting 19.3 miles to the gallon using reg unleaded gas .

Here's what I do with my 03 V8. It's Mobil 1 5w-30 and the 209 Mobil 1 Filter (longer and more capacity and media area than the recomended one). I buy oil and filters by the case and change every 5k miles. I looked at all the filters and there's too much risk out there. The Mobil 1 is made by Champion and is of known and consistant quality. Some other brand names are names only.
My first changes were at 2k and 5k so it was 2k miles and 3k miles and then 5k miles after that. I keep receipts and a log book and do analysis once a year.

I use the now discontinued (in the US) Toyota resin media filter for the V8 (also fits 22R series engines). The LC80/100 guys use these. List was like $15 ea. This was supposedly the highest quality filter made, and I've heard it's the filter that Toyota bases its 7.5K mile oil change interval on. The filter has a pre-lubed gasket, is longer than most toyota filters, made in Japan by Denso. They're still available in Japan for 2000 yen. The lower-cost replacement filter for the LC100 is now made in Thailand.

In fact, in some cars (like Hondas), it is not wise to change the oil after the first 1000 miles because Honda adds a special break-in oil additive from the factory...therefore, you do not want to change the oil too early. I am not sure about Toyota vehicles.
For me, i changed oil after the first 3000 miles, and then at 5000 miles with every 5000 mile interval thereafter.
Hope this helps.

my 4runner just hit the 1k mark and i changed the oil.. i didnt want to take any chances since i drive in rush hour traffic in the morning and evening (about 1.5 hr trip one way-ugh)...
