Very informative post, but what about new vehicles that already have 100+ miles on them from test drives, From my experience most people really put thier foot into cars they are test driving, atleast I do anyway.

I had a concern about this too.
I did do some research about a process that Toyota Engine Manufacturers "Cold Fire" to the engine before sending.
I changed my oil at 500 miles (regular dino) and then will be doing a switch to full synthetic Mobil 1 Truck Suv 5w40 at 2k on the odo. 5 gallon container is 19.95 at Walmart.
I would like to do the amsol filter bypass like one forum member did but I can't afford it at this time.
I will follow a 5k OCI.

I just bought a 2005 4Runner SR5 V8 4WD. Drove it off the lot with only 3 miles on the odometer. I noticed yesterday that after a harsh acceleration following a quick brake to an almost full stop and then immediately accelerating confuses the transmission. Like it gets stuck between gears (1st and 2nd). I have to give it time before it knows what gear it should be in. Well, my question is, is this normal symptoms during the "break-in" process. Should I give it time before it would switch gears smoothly? It currently has 150 miles on it. I was told at the dealer to bring in the truck after 4 weeks to do a final inspection on it. Should I wait? I only had this for 3 days.
I did however get a great deal on it, $27,000 (final price) with 0% financing.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hey All,
I am a proud owner of a 2007 SR5 - nothing fancy but I like it a lot!! However, I have done some moronic things like drive in 4 for a while there before my friend said what are you doing??? Then, also took it to a regular wash for the first wash as opposed to hand car wash. I have not seen a drop-off in the performance of the vehicle or anything but was wondering is the vehicle somewhat idiot proof for the likes of me??? =)
Also, I bought the car 1/27/07 so in the middle of winter - now that things are warming although it got colder this weekend (NY) - I was thinking about getting it waxed etc. What are your thoughts on the subject.
Thanks

GB, don't worry...your 4runner is good to go. No damage expected.

Sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead, but I'm wondering if this oil filter is still the best for our V8 2UZFE engines?

If you think about it, F1 cars always have rebuilt or new engines, but you don't see them running around the racetrack for 3000+ miles below a certain RPM.

Mototuneusa and F1, NASCAR, etc are breaking-in race engines, which are torn down for rebuild after each race and they probably manufacture the components to even tighter tolerances than a typical production car engine that's massed produced.
I've seen the argument both ways on various forums. I would think the manufacturer of the product knows what's best for the longevity. The debate on break-in method is as lively as the V6 vs. V8 threads here.
But at the end of the day, it's your vehicle. Both sides of the coin have been presented.

5th Generation, but this is still in the manual....
■Breaking in your new Toyota
To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following precautions is recommended:
●For the first 200 miles (300 km):
Avoid sudden stops.
●For the first 500 miles (800 km):
Do not tow a trailer.
●For the first 1000 miles (1600 km):
• Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration.
• Do not drive continuously in the low gears.
• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.

Thai, thanks for this post! I held a similar discussion with a coworker this past week and your post sums up the biggest points.
