No master keys - What do i do?
I bought my 99 4 runner from a used dealer. It only came with the sub-key, no masters, no key chain transmitters. My vehicle has the transponder built into the key. I got the key code from the dealer. Where (besides the high priced dealer) can I get the key programmed? Or, what do I need to do to get master keys?
Thanks!

I don't know of any other place to get your key programmed. The dealer should be able to cut a master key from the VIN.

To Program An Additional Key:
1) Place an already programmed Master key (one that works all locks) in the ignition, but DO NOT turn on.
2) Press the GAS pedal five (5) times.
3) Press the BRAKE pedal six (6) times.
4) Remove the key from the ignition.
5) Insert the new key, but DO NOT turn it on.
6) Press the GAS pedal one (1) time only and wait about a minute for the security light to quit flashing.
7) Remove the key and Press the BRAKE pedal one (1) time only.
8) Wait at least ten (10) seconds, then re-insert the new key and start the car.
You can have a maximum of ten (10) transponder keys programmed into your car

Go to a Toyota dealership and empty your wallet.

i take it the 4runners prior to 03 dont have the same engine immobilizer system as the 03-04 does, since he was able to drive it off the used dealer lot.
i know on the 03-04 4runners, if you lose all your chipped keys, you have to replace the whole engine immobilizer system, since the only way to program a new chipped key is to have an original chipped key to program from.
the dealer was very strict on making sure i knew this when i got my new 04 runner.

Since we're talking about keys
I just bought my 1999 LTD and I only got one remote and one key. I want to make an extra key incase I get locked out....
Questions:
1. How do I find out if my key has a transponder?
2. How do I make a copy of the orginal key with the transponder?
3. How do I know if the key I have is a master key ?
4. what happens if I use a regular (all metal) key that I made in a local hardware store?
Thanks,
Hany

If you need the chip for your key, the metal key will NOT start your car. Try it.

usually :
a. master keys will unlock all locks including glove box
b. valet keys will start the vehicle but will not unlock the glove box
c. sub keys will only unlock the doors
transponder keys have a black covering over them usually and be slightly bigger than the old style master keys (pre transponder keys)
on the new 03-04 keys, you have 2 master chipped keys (black fob), and a valet chipped key (grey fob). i had a sub key made to just un/lock the doors so i can run the truck during the sub zero winters and leave the master chipped key in the ignition.
my wife has the other master chipped key (black fob) and i keep the valet chipped key (grey fob) in the safe, in case i lose a master key. since you need either the master/valet chipped key to program another chipped key.
as far as cutting a new key, they can usually look up the master key id and cut a new one, unless you have the master key id plate.
as far as programming a new chipped key, i am not sure how they work prior to the 03 models, since you are able to drive the vehicle off the lot w/o a chipped key. the 03 and newer versions, the engine will not stay running w/o a chipped key.

Quote from their website
"You have no keys. We will have to come out to the car, make a working "mechanical" key and then transfer the cuts onto 2 transponder blanks. With mobile service, labor to originate the original mechanical key, 2 transponder keys at $30.00 per key and programming of the vehicle we charge $150.00 to complete this operation."
"The information presented below is what is being provided to the public by Toyota and ILCO
1998-2001 The Toyota Electronic Control Module does not have programming modes without a
pre-programmed key.
If there is no key available that is already programmed into the module, the module must be replaced.
CHARLEY'S INFORMATION
I have acquired the ability to reset the Toyota / Lexus ECM to its "virgin" state which will allow it
to accept new keys into the ECM. "

Keys
First, you should have made the used dealer you purchased this vehicle from get you the proper keys as part of the deal for nothing. Second, IMO the simplest solution is take what you got stuck now with to the dealer and let them help you in person. Learn a lesson and don't buy an improperly equipped used vehicle next time.
The used dealer screwed you over, shame on them. Another used dealer screws you over again, shame on you.
Good luck!

Okay, so I am a bit confused: I have only the valet key, not the black master. but i do have the key code tag. (see above, says a valet key or master can be used? I saw on another post you could only use a master to program a new master?)
Can i use this to program a new MASTER key? I am ready to order on one ebay/amazon but want to be sure.
Thanks much!
