This sounds like a steal of a deal! The extended guard FRAM oil filter I bought cost me a whooping $8.99.

The dealer told me to only use Toyota filters to keep my extended warranty valid. It sounds kind of flaky to me but it's okay with me.

Your dealer is full of that stinky brown stuff which exits the human body from the rear.
Do your own oil changes, write down your mileage and the date, the name brand of your oil, the grade of the oil, the type of oil and/or air filters, then staple your receipt to this piece of paper. I always buy these items on a separate receipt just for the above purpose. Place this information in your glove box or wherever you keep your maintenance records. This is all you need to verify that you are performing routine maintenance at the proper mileage intervals. The Toyota corporation tells you to do this in your vehicle's owner's manual. Take a look if you don't believe me. As a matter of fact, show this information to your "car crazy" type maintenance dealer.

Go back to the dealer and ask them for your FREE filters then. The Bendix corp SUED Ford over this. The Bendix act was the result. Basically saying that...If a aftermarket company makes a comperable part and the manufacturer says that using the aftermarket part will void the warranty then the manufacturer MUST provide this part for FREE....YES FREE.

The PH3980 is twice as long so probably twice the filter surface area and twice as long before it starts bypassing, as all modern filters will do when dirty.
I don't know which vehicle the PH3980 is filter is normally recommended for but I'll bet you can find a match in your favorite brand.

My V6 came with the larger filter (made for the V8, i think) when I changed the oil for the first time I noticed the filters were not the same size. The stealer said the smaller filter is the correct filter.. and gave some excuse of why it came with the larger filter.
I am now thinking, after reading the great article you read, to change back to the V8 filter which is the model number I think you are mentioning. More area for better oil flow.. I can use the filter longer too, I assume.

The Fram part number is the same for the V6 as the V8, same for Mobil I believe. Same filter for either sized engine...

Just a question... I am no mechanic and am considered a novice when it comes to engines and such, but using Mobil1, or any fully synthetic oil in a completely stock engine just seems a little overkill and a waste of money. I thought that synthetic oil was designed for performance engines more or less that break down oil quicker than normal? If im wrong, please let me know your reasoning because I just can't justify spending $5/qt of oil on a motor that is stock and has been running fine on regular oil for years.

K&N 4 Life...
I have been using K&N Oil filters for the last 2 years with my last two cars and now my T4R. The most expensive (in Auto Zone) and the best in my opinion. good luck

i observed that amsoil has better flow by design, especially the cylinder that goes in the middle of the filter material, amsoil has more holes and slightly larger than toyota oem.

Is that a nano-fiber filter (EaO) from Amsoil?
