Any advice?

The stealership quoted a replacement for both rear axle bearings at 900 each!
I have another shop quoting 950 total. I have some experience in working on cars, but Im not sure if I would be able to properly do this myself. any advice?
its a 2005 SR5 2wd. the shop said there was two different setups. one that would take 3 hrs each and on that would take about an hour each. what is he talking about?

Thumbs up Thank you!

I used this DIY tutorial today and worked great. My 2007 4Runner Sport (140K miles) had a leaky drivers side rear axle seal. It wasn't a bad leak but could sometimes smell the diff fluid when exiting the truck after a drive. I could also see fluid residue on the disk shield (but not enough the coat the inner wheel). When I took everything apart, the circular spring that is normally on the back side of the seal was just hanging on the axle--it had come off the seal. So that was indeed the culprit. New seal on and good to go.

Anyway, I followed this tutorial to the letter and didn't have any major issues. I did break one of the e-brake cable 10mm bolts--snapped the head right off. But i gingerly removed the second one without issue.

The string idea to hold the spring retainer for the brake shoes is a brilliant idea. I used picture hanging wire with the same result--worked great.

I couldn't get the diff fluid fill bolt off at the top of the diff so I just left it and topped off the fluid by squirting down the axle housing. I'll have to figure out how to get that rusted fill bolt off--a project for another day.

Thanks for this great tutorial--it saved me $600 from having someone else do it!

Best,
Dan

Does this write-up cover 5th gens too? I cannot find a rear wheel bearing replacement thread specific to 5th gens.

I'm curious where you got the torque specs from?

I just did the front brakes on my '06 Sport, and the FSM specs were 91 ft-lbs for the caliper bolts and 82-84 ft-lbs for the wheel lugs.

Can you remove the backing plate once the axles are out?

i bought the rear CENTRIC 40544002E {#951003} from rockauto and was going to do it but reading and watching videos made me change my mind lol

I have this junkyard axle, the plan was to do the bearing and then swap it in so there's no down time. But it's got surface rust. Any advice how best to clean it up without damaging the surface?

Can this be done without a press?

Is it possible to do this without a press? I did the front and rear bearings on an 80 series LandCruiser and didn't need a press for bearing removal or install. Granted I had to deal with setting preload on the LC which is not mentioned here at all. These T4R bearings are a lot more expensive too.

I'm not schooled on various wheel bearing technology so have no appreciation for the basic design differences. At any rate, if I can exchange elbow grease for hunting down and paying some place to do the press in/out, I'm inclined to do so.

80's are full float axles. Different design, can be field serviced (I got to be pretty quick at servicing the wheel bearings on mine when i had it.

May I ask how the NAPA shop pressed in the wheel bearing, since you bought the bearing/hub assembly. Did they press out the bearing from the assembly, and then installed it on the axle? I know with older 4runner, people buys wheel bearing instead of bearing hub assembly.

The stealership I go to get diagnosed is charging $900 for labor alone, so perhaps a $1400 dollar job - both bearings though.

I will try and get a good part list and take to a mechanic to do the work - maybe $550, for me that's a win.

What exactly presses together? I'm trying to figure out if the whole bearing assembly presses onto the axle or if the bearing itself presses into the assembly. Ultimately...I'm trying to figure out if purchasing the Timken assembly shown in the link below will allow me to forgo presswork.

More Information for TIMKEN HA594246

Or will it have to be pressed onto the axle?

Question O-rings...

Great post, came across it while reassembling today and trying to figure out o-rings which are mentioned in step 12, the outer o-ring between the axle/diff housing and the bearing assembly... I have a smaller, inner ring, on or near the axle, can't find it in the TRM nor parts diagrams, uncertain how to source it. Ideas? Thank you. -John

Later: Ha, newbie me at this. What looked like a second o-ring was actually a metal springy ring on the inside of the oil seal. Noticed that when installing the new seal.
