rotor size question
I have a 2004 4Runner SR5 with the 17" factory wheels on it. I have had warped rotors in the past and had the dealer turn them , and now they are warped again , at 67K miles. I want to just go ahead and replace them . From all the parts stores I am seeing two types of rotors available. ones for cars that come with 16" wheels and ones that come with 17" wheels. I know this may be a stupid question, but from what I have read this isnt exactly the case, but instead that only 4runners that have the sport package use the larger rotors. Can someone comment on this one ? Also any recomendations on good aftermarket rotors, or a generally good brand to go with .

Sounds right to me. O'reilley's only asked what size wheel I had (SR5 with 17's) and sold me the wrong size, too big. I am just glad I remembered to compare them to the old ones before trying to put the caliper back on.

What was the deall with the bigger rotors? I am asking because I have the SR5 with the 17" rims but want to upgrade to the larger sport edition rotors. From your prospective, what did it looked like could be done to accommendate the installation of the larger rotor when you compare it to the smaller one on the wheel.

You will have to do a search on this issue. But from what I remember, you will also have to change at least the mounting bracket for the caliper, and maybe the calipers themselves.

I didn't try to put them on, so I am unsure what would be involved. I would guess changing the calipers would be in order, but that is just a guess. Search away.

I have a 06 4Runner SR5 with 17" wheels.Today I took off my front rotor and measured it. The front rotors are 12.6. I also had a 98 4runner sr5 with 16 inch wheels.The fronts are also 12.6 rotors .Im going with Raybestos Premium rotors.Their top of the line ones I took pictures of the rotor if anyone wants to see the size

Hello,
This past Saturday, I replaced all 4 new rotors on my 4runner. I didnt change the brake pads since they're brand new from last summer. you think it will damamge the new rotors without brand new pads? I wasn;t sure if it was logical and waste more money to buy brake pads. any help would be helpful.

Anytime you do the rotors you should also do the Pads. When doing brakes you have to realize that both the rotor and the pad are not completely flat surfaces. After replacing them you should do a series of stops from about 30 mph, this allows the surface of the pad to mate with the surface of the rotor. Which should lead to a more evenly spread wear across the pad itself, it also increased the braking capacity to a degree. Essentially think of a rotor like a fingerprint.
