1st Oil Change... at what mileage?

I have a 2006 with the V8 with about 900 miles on it. I was thinking of doing my first oil change at 1,000 miles to eliminate any metal shavings, etc. from the new motor that might be swirling around in the oil.

Does anyone know if the V8 4runner comes new with special break-in oil that is supposed to remain in the engine until 3,000 miles?

Are there any known consequences from changing the oil earlier than recommended on a 2006 V8 4runner?

Anyone out there do the same with their new cars?

Eric

I changed the factory fill at 1,000 miles (actually 958 mi) and went with Havoline conventional oil. I changed it again at 3,000 miles with Havoline, and at 5,000 miles with Mobil Clean 7500 semi-synthetic. At 10,000 miles I changed it to Mobil 1 Extended Performance, and I will continue with the 5,000 mile or 6 month OCI until the warranty is up.

More likely than not, this is overkill. Someone who didn't do all of this may end up with a better-wearing engine than mine. Who knows. I don't mind doing it, and I plan on keeping this vehicle until its dead (may even pass it on to my 7 year old son nine years from now), so I just figured what the hell.

Just performed first ever oil change at the dealership. The mileage was 5,140 or so. The MAINT light flashed at 4,500 and remained on at 5,000. This is a pre-programmed precaution to get people into the dealership before owners begin to neglect their vehicles and I believe has no bearing on the condition of your oil. Mine was not low nor filthy. However, I do plan to continue to perform routine oil changes every 5,000 miles with or without the MAINT light. I paid for the oil (Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic--only found in Germany) which was about $40 for 7 quarts. They used 5.5 quarts, returned the rest to me, and I had to buy their filter because I can't find that here either. The labor plus the filter cost 58 euros which equals around $70. What a bunch of crap that is. I take my own oil and do the same with BMW by purchasing their filter and it only costs me 15 euros in labor. I don't understand what the deal is there. This will be the first and last time the Italian dealership will handle this vehicle since we will be leaving in 4.5 months back to the U.S. They wouldn't/couldn't do an alignment check I asked because this vehicle isn't in the European inventory and they don't have the measurements/parameters needed to do this precision task. My truck was delivered misaligned but I can't do anything about it now but pay out of pocket because I can't prove it.

My first oil & filter change was "free" as a condition of getting my car from the local dealer, so I had it done at 1800 miles with Toyota dino oil. I changed it again about every 3,000 or 3,500 miles since then - but I always use Mobil-1 5w30 synthetic.

Yes, I realize that I could go much, much longer between changes.......but I just chalk it up to being extra safe (anal) about maintenance on my 4Runner.
:awais:

I drove it to Michigan and back, along with some other trips out of state, and went 3,500 miles since my last change. When I drained out the Mobil-1, it was barely dirty. Even so, a new filter and fresh Mobil-1 went into my clean crankcase.

Whomever gets my 4Runner at the conclusion of my lease is going to get one nicely-maintained ride that still runs and looks almost as good as new.

Even my "old" Sentra still gets Mobil-1 as well.

1,200
3,000
&
then every 3,000 after

Rotation at every every other oil change aka 6,000

Easy to remember & why get dirty again when they recommend every 5,000

Be sure to air up the tires, wash inside & outside of the rims & after drying them, spray wax to keep them shining & prevent as much brake dust.

I did my first oil change around 3,000 miles. No metal pieces in the oil.
