Interesting real world test video. The guy used some metal samples mounted on his frame.

In hopes of preventing rust as long as I can on my 2016 I sprayed 3 coats of Eastwood Internal Frame Coating inside my frame rails, cross members and lower A arms. This took 10 cans. Where I see rust starting I sand it out and repaint with Eastwood Rust Encapsulating paint. On top of all this I sprayed the crap out of everything metal underneath the truck with Fluidfilm. My sliders rusted out pretty bad last winter despite being painted with (Not) Rust-Oleum. Took them off, ground out the rust and repainted with Eastwoods and sprayed with copious amounts of Fluidfilm. I used 3 cans of FF which I pickup locally at Lowe's hardware. As you know we're having a good ole fashioned hardcore winter so we'll see in the spring how well this works. I am mixed about pressure washing on a regular basis during the winter as I usually do because I don't want to blast off all the Fluidfilm.

I used a single rattle can of fluid film in the fall and was impressed with the results. You can see in the attached pic that the areas that I sprayed had very little road salt stick to them, whereas the areas that I didn't spray appear white from all of the salt.

As of this spring, there is no visible rust anywhere that I sprayed. There is still a thin layer of goo on most of the places I sprayed. I'll probably get a compressor and sprayer for this fall to get more complete coverage.

WARNING: I took my car in for my first "free" oil change and the tech diagnosed a "massive fluid leak" in the front diff. They wanted to do a complete rebuild of the front diff to change a seal between the two halves of the diff housing. I got underneath the truck and didn't notice any leaks. I suspected that the tech misinterpreted the fluid film as a leak and I requested a master tech to give it a second look. Master tech confirmed there was no leak. Just something to keep in mind if you take your truck in for service and have sprayed. (funnily enough, they said I could continue to drive it despite having no diff fluid ).

I can vouch for fluid film. This stuff is gold! I bought my 02' 4Runner in February 2008 and immediately coated with fluid film. At that time the frame was still pretty clean and rust free. I have applied fluid film a few times since then and this thing is still super rust free. I live in Ohio and almost every 4Runner or Tacoma a see is full of rust.

I just bought a 2018 4Runner and will be coating it in the next few weeks. I can only imagine how good starting with fluid film this early will do.

That's a really good testing results video. Stoner jam background tune if good, too.

I also spray some FF in the doors, hood, and rear tailgate weep holes just in case.

Fluid Film on matte black textured powder coat

Hey all: anyone ever have any issues with fluid film on powder coated steel bumpers? I haven’t found anything online that says it hurts the powder coat but interested what folks think and whether it is safe to use on powder coat as a preventative measure from winter and salty roads, when rocks chip the coating and expose metal. Thanks!

Fluid Film Real World Test: Michigan Winter vs Truck Frame - YouTube
Given the results here it looks like fluid film washes off fairly easily. Especially if you plan to use an undercarriage pressure washer attachment for removing salt. My line of thinking is to apply fluid film to the inside of the frame only in the fall, where it will protect but not be washed off, then to use the pressure washer undercarriage attachment year round but especially after snow storms where salt has been applied.

Alternately you could apply fluid film everywhere under the truck (body and frame) and then skip the undercarriage wash but you would have to be very confident that you applied the fluid film it very thoroughly. I'm not that confident . Do people here use undercarriage washing after applying fluid film?

Just brought an '07 4Runner from Texas to the rustiest part of the rust belt. Absolutely amazed at how clean this thing is underneath. That said I'm doing everything I can to keep it that way.

I can't speak on how well fluid film holds up to undercarriage washes but my guess would be not too well, especially after multiple washes. High pressure and soap will definitely take it off.

On reading this and other threads it seems a lot of car washes recirculate water which can get even more salt in places we certainly don't want it. My local car wash doesn't offer touchless without undercarriage so my move is suck it up and use the manual bays. Tends to yield better results and is a bit more cost effective as well (just not much fun in the winter).

Side note, I know this is a 6+ year old thread but as always big thanks to the community for all the info. Really like the way the black FF turned out!
