I've been using Blue Coral's Dri-Clean upholstery cleaner for years and it seems to pull nearly everything out of the carpet. I'll spray the foam on the carpet, use a medium to stiff bristled nylon brush to work it in, let it dry for 5-10 min and then shop-vac the carpet to remove all the grunge that was pulled up.
I have a light tan interior and was able to get all the mud out of the carpet after a week of camping last summer without any real work at all. One of the perks to using the brush is that it will fluff the carpet back up to nearly new.
Best of luck.
Oh yeah, Dri-clean can be found at Wal-mart or pretty much any auto parts place for about $4.00/can. I can do my 4runner & the wife's Monte Carlo and still have about 1/4 of a can left.
