I did mine a few days ago because I was having some pretty bad clucking. So far so good. I used green grease like someone else mentioned. Here's a short clip pumping out the old stuff.

Going to try and do this tonight on our 2007 SE. Want to make sure I get the right grease.
Is this correct? http://m.oreillyauto.com/h5/r/oap/si...0412&ppt=C0139
I haven't been under to look but the two on the shaft is the part you DON'T want to overdo, right?

Photobucket is no longer allowing public pic sharing.

Eric the Car Guy has a series of videos maintaining an 04 4runner.

This one is for the drive line. Go the the last 10 mins for lubing the fittings.

I've had this "Clunk" issue since I first got it - and pardon my lack of automotive know how, I'm here and trying to improve - and honestly chalked it up to a rust issue. I accidentally came across this thread while reading another build thread - The time I've wasted in the middle of the night instead of studying HA!

Anyway down to this thread business - I'm going to attempt this later today after class/work and I'll post my results. My quick comments and questions from reading these 9 pages though:

People are arguing about pump count but one thing I noticed is that people are using different sized grease guns.... If this is relevant idk how it wasn't addressed before, and means pump count can be thrown out the window on this thread.
Also, I'm going to go with trying just a little the first go around - especially in the front - and see if that solves the problem. If not I guess I've got no choice then to just pump until I see the old stuff come out. I'm also planning on using just the one grease - Pink Mobil 1 stuff mentioned.

If anyone see's any errors in my statement, please correct me! As I'm here looking for advice. Thanks to everyone who has already contributed and will contribute after this.

edit: @ZebRuaj I saw this was in the maintenance section and was wondering how long it'd take for someone to notice this post - Hence I figured I'd @ somebody and you just had the most recent activity on it. Do you have any input for me? Thanks in advance!

I use Mobil 1 grease in my grease gun too. My applications were as follows:

Spider gears: 1st time ever - pumped until saw grease come out, pump a few more to get rid of any old grease, and then wipe it up so it doesn't sling everywhere while driving. Since then, I grease every few months, if not, every oil change. Pump til I see red start to squeeze out, call it good.

Slip yoke: Majority of the posts say to pump until you see it move, but don't over do it too as the grease has no where to go. If you extend the shaft too far, you're SOL. I've never seen mine move by pumping in grease. I just do a handful of pumps. If nothing moves, do one or two more, call it good. Redo every oil change or so.

Technically, you're suppose to use 2 different greases.
Molybdenum disulfide based chassis grease to the slip yokes and lithium grease for the spiders. I read somewhere its ok to use lithium where Moly is required, but not supposed to use Moly where lithium is needed .. so I just use lithium based grease on all of it (like a lot of other owners, shops probably too). No problems to report.

Good luck with your maintenance. Hope it helps with your driveline clunk.

Has anyone had luck in fully wiping off the excess after adding grease? My u-joints always throw some excess and the car smells like burnt grease no matter how much I clean.

I've even taken to wrapping aluminum foil around the exhaust and taking a drive to purge the majority of excess off, but that's only about a 90% solution.

You can use a small/thin screwdriver with a thin towel wrapped around the tip of it and clean it out. Time consuming but it works.

I had grease come out of both slip joints after expanding.
Does that mean the seals are shot or something.
Clunk is gone now though. Seems much tighter.

Does anyone have updated pictures? I had the clunk so I greased the Front/Rear U joint as well as the front slip yoke. The slip yoke took a lot of grease before I saw any movement. The U joints took about 6 pumps before I saw the old stuff start to come out. Then another couple till I saw the new stuff. All noises are gone now.

Where are the other 3, on the front shaft? I didn't even look for more.

I know this is an old thread, but I finally got rid of the clunk so it might work for others.

Installed new rear control arms.

Upper control arms were left the same as stock.

Lower control arms were lengthened exactly 1/4'' from stock.

Clunk is completely gone, I used to get it really bad when hard braking or U-Turns on the fly. Truck does it just a bit, but its close to non-existent now. I know buying adjustable lowers is a stretch, but thats what helped me. Also truck is lifted 2.5'' in the rear on OME springs.

Sorry if I missed it somewhere... Does anyone know the size of the zerks on the u-joint (it came out w/ a 7mm socket)? I have a damaged one (silly rocks in mud).
