I can't beleive that with so many people having problems that they don't lube the driveshaft at the factory.
I called a local Toyota dealership service department yesteray about this and he said that it's not a big deal and they just lube the driveshaft. He never answered my question of "do you still see 4runners being shipped currently with this problem"? I never got a straight answer.

You should be able to get Mobil 1 at any auto parts store.

HELP PLEASE
about a month ago i went and bought two grease guns and only saw the mobil1 pink grease. I was meaning to ask about the other grease as I have no idea about it. Of all the other grease tubes I looked at in 2 stores, one said it was "moly-fortified", but mentions it's made for certain autos (i think gm, chrysler, honda) with no mention of toyota. There was another that says toyota, but no mention of moly-fortified on it. I wasn't sure what to get so i thought i should ask here. am i looking for "moly-fortified"?
now i'm seeing more and more that people are just using the pink grease for everything, but i'm not sure i want to do that...

You're looking for a lithium-based grease, grade NLGI-2. I've seen the moly as well, but since a lot of people here swear by Mobil 1, I went with that instead. I saw some really cheap no-name lithium grease at the auto parts store that said it was "compatible with NLGI-2", but didn't say it actually met the specs.

I didn't find Mobil 1 at the auto parts store, but I got it at Farm & Fleet. I also think I saw it at Sears. Shop around a little bit and you should find it.

thanks toto, i just sucked it up and did the mobil1 for all too.
buckfever, if you have the v6 4x4, in 2h you can freely move the front driveshaft. the rear you'll have to move the truck forwards/backwards a bit to position. any more questions and i'll be happy to answer....
there's a good write-up on toyota120.com ... click maintenance --> then click driveline service... don't know if i'm allowed to reference another site... forgive if i can't... i'll take it right off.

Use the jack to lift one of the tires off of the ground -- this will allow the driveshaft to turn freely.

I just started to have that drive line clunk (again) for a couple of days now and have been too busy / too lazy to go out in the garage and pump some grease.
About a year ago I bought a grease gun, flex hose and some mobile 1 synthetic (pink) grease from pep boys... put it it all together and have been eliminating the clunk for about a year.

(It took me more than 20 pumps on the front and back slide yoke to make the shafts expand. The shafts only expanded about the size of this dash ( - ). I hope that is not too much!)

What is the size of the zerk fittings? or is it one size fits all?

Zerk fitting size
There is one standard size that you will see the vast majority of the time. Unless you are deliberately looking for something different you are unlikely to buy the wrong thing.
I second the suggestion of getting a pistol grip gun and a flex hose. that will make things much easier.

went to napa auto parts and got the pistol grip grease gun and it comes with the flexible hose, tried the tip and it fits. the flexible hose is nice to have .
