07 V8 4x4 Zerk Fitting Pics UPDATED with all 6

On the front of the rear shaft the Ujoint fitting in there and the Slide yoke fitting on the outside:

On the back of rear shaft for the life of me I can't find more than one fitting. There's the U joint fitting and that's all.

So I contacted the local Service Department explained to him how the driveshaft clunking had developed and how by greasing up the driveshaft alleviated the issue. He helped me with the locations of the zerk fitting locations, it was pretty clear that I'd only hit the three on the back shaft. And then I asked for guidance on the amount of grease to pump into the slide yoke fitting. First he offered "a couple of seconds worth". Then I explained on the U joints how I go till it just starts to express, should I go double that amount on the Slide yoke? He said that what he does is he watches for the first sign of expansion of the driveshaft and stops right there.

I tried to observe for that expansion, when I was greasing up the front slide yoke zerk, I couldn't see anything after pumping a good amount in so I stopped. I don't have a good rule of thumb on that.

Definitely approach from the driver side(for the front shaft) and rotate the shaft so the zerks are facing that way.
Here the rear of the front shaft:

Here the front of the front shaft:

That's all 6.

Anyway that's all I got.

Guess your using Mobil 1 synthetic? Looks like the same grease I've been using. I counted 6 Zerks for both front and rear shafts.

I just emailed Toyota asking about the # of fittings on the 07 and the amount of grease to be pumped into the Slide Yoke fitting compared to the U joint fittings. We'll see what they come back with.

I don't know how to edit the title, but I now have pics of all 6 of the zerk fittings on the original thread.

just wipe off the excess grease otherwise , it'd be full of dust and grime all over, as it spins off.

I just cant get at them buggers , whats a good style grease gun to be able to do it with 1 person.

I tried to grease them myself today and could not hold the hose straight on the zerk and pump at the same time.

Per the recommendation of others here this is the one I picked up at Autozone, the flexible hose needed to be purchased separately:

I use both hands to push it on the zerk, once it's on I can hold it in place with one hand and then I find the pistol grip. The pistol grip and the flexible hose, I think are both essential in DIY. I also find that I need to move the truck to put the zerk fittings in the most accessible positions, again per the recommendation of someone else here.

For the U joint, you can actually hear when it finally starts to express, although you can visually confrim it, 6-7 pumps is all it took. I'm putting in around 16-17 pumps on the Slide Yoke fittings. I've read that you don't want to put too much, but then the guys that are successful at eliminating the clunck via greasing the driveshaft, have reported being aggressive.

Thanks again for the great pics Buckfever. I was curious to find out what year your 4R is and if there have been any changes to the driveshaft since '03 (I'm expecting an '07 anytime now).

I was also curious to find out more about "Coral Beef".

Previous post from capitan

I found this thread on the type of grease and some manual pics.

Looks like you are suppose to use 2 types of grease

From what I've read, it's been indicated that the designation for 2 different types of grease was dropped from the service manual more recently, but that even before that, few bothered to have 2 different grease guns for the task and simply used one type.

2 types of grease

Local dealers seem clueless on this. When I stopped in to ask for the 2 grease types specified in the repair manual they had nothing of the sort at the parts counter. When I spoke to a service supervisor he said that they just use the single type of grease that a supplier brings in to them. He didn't know what it was, and had no idea that there were different types.

I bought Mobil synthetic and did it all myself. No problems so far.

I've always used Mobil 1 syn grease on all of the fittings. I had 60,000 miles on my 2001 Tacoma with no problems and currently have 70,000 miles on my 2004 4 Runner with no problems.

Can I pick up this Mobil 1 syn grease at any auto store like PepBoys or Strauss Auto? Did you get the grease from Autozone too?
