Jerry Can cleaning tips?

Does anyone have experience with Jerry Can (Wavian) cleaning or proper care?

For the times that they are not in use or empty, what is the best way to keep the inside rust / build-up free?

Thanks in advance.

I keep my empty and check for rust occasionally (with flashlight) without any problems for several years now.
