Spark Plug Time

I changed the ole plugs today. It went smooth and took about 45 to 60 minutes. It is scary removing plugs that have been in an engine so long (106,000 miles) Denzo SK20R11.

Some tips:
Remove the coil pack connector before removing the coil pack mounting bolt. This way you wiggle the connector off with some force. Depress the tab and use a large screwdriver to wiggle/wedge the connector off. The bolt size is 10 mm. I used a 5/8 inch deep well socket to remove the spark plugs. It is a spark plug socket so it has the rubber bootie inside it to retrieve the plug. The plugs are buried in the block, so a couple of socket extensions are needed.

The head is aluminum so in this case I would use a torque wrench! The torque is 13 ft-lbs or 156 in-lbs.

I had to remove the air filter and filter housing to get to the last two plugs.

I also took opportunity to spray the MAF (mass air flow) sensor with contact cleaner.

Did you use antiseize? I have read many times in this forum that it is a good idea.

Spark Plug Time for the V8

Yea I used a very small amount on each plug. It will completely burn away at those temperatures over 100,000 miles and since the threads are not the sealing device. But it makes it easier to install.

I went ahead and replaced the wires while I was in there doing the plugs on mine.

Freeked out when I got home from the Toyota dealer having not really paid attention when the parts guy bagged the wires. Got home and realized they only gave me three wires not six.

LOL - a quick call to the dealer set me straight that the coil packs are shared and only one side of the motor has wires.

Bought the wires right after buying the truck without really looking too much so I didn't feel too bad.

I use antisieze on all plugs that I change. I also use dielectric grease inside the coil boot and the connectors.
Pretty simple job to do, always best to do yourself so you know how to. When i show people how to do stuff like this, they're amazed on how simple it can be.
