Transfer Case Actuator

Is it possible that overfilling the transfer case during drain & fill maintenance could cause enough pressure to create a leak in the transfer case to actuator connection?

I ask because I'm having to replace a $1200 perfectly operational actuator because of a seal leak. Add in the 1400 for labor, too. Nice design, Toyota.

But it didn't leak at all until I got the fluid changed (at the stealership) - never a leak, nada...and by their own admission, the dealer very, very rarely had to deal with 4WD models.

It's an 04 V8 SE 4wd

It would be tough to overfill because the oil would flow out the fill hole.

I think you need to goto another shop, or consult a good parts guy who can show you an exploded diagram of the actuator and the seal to see if there is an alternative. There has to be a better fix than spending that much. Good luck.

Thanks, Rook - I guess I'm just baffled at the coincidence - it started leaking, to the day, after I had the fluids changed. And so far, this dealership has charged me to rotate tires they didn't rotate, didn't tighten down the new seat frame replaced under warranty, among other things. The only way that I knew they didn't rotate the tires was that I had a slow leak in the left rear tire, and lo and behold, same tire in the same place had a slow leak. So you can understand the frustration & lack of trust. I'm putting it onto my local mechanic's lift tomorrow with a 4wd "expert" mechanic (mostly Land Rovers, though, all vintages) I appreciate your advice...
